Alexander Hewatt McGraw

DOERUN — Alexander Hewatt McGraw, 96, of Doerun died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2010, at Woodlands Living Center in Moultrie.

Graveside rites will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at Doerun Cemetery with Dan Williamson and the Rev. Joe Smith officiating. Casketbearers will be Sam Sims, Mac Sims, Paul Manning, Lex McGraw, Brandon McGraw and Kevin Nobis.

Born Feb. 8, 1914, in Doerun, Mr. McGraw was the son of the late William Peyton McGraw and Emma Hewatt McGraw. He received his degree in chemical engineering from Georgia Tech, and was associated with the Aluminum Company of America in Pittsburgh for several years. He and his wife returned to Doerun in 1944, where he managed Shepard Fertilizer Company for many years, before retiring.

He then continued his education at Valdosta State College, earning his Master’s Degree in Education. He taught chemistry and physics at Westover High School in Albany for 10 years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Ruth Miller McGraw; and his brother, William Marvin McGraw.

Survivors include one daughter, Rosemary Barfield and husband Don of Albany; one son, Alex McGraw and wife Barbara of Atlanta; a special family friend, Dorothy Dickens of Moultrie; seven grandchildren, Sam Sims and wife Susan, Mac Sims and wife Dionne, Molly Manning and husband Paul, Lex McGraw and wife Shelby, Mandi Nobis and husband Kevin, Brandon McGraw and Brittany McGraw; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at Doerun United Methodist Church.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Cobb Funeral Chapel.
