SEA ISLAND, Ga. — Dorothy Mai Ogden Wright, 82, of Sea Island, Ga., died Friday, Oct. 9, 2009, at Southeast Georgia Medical System, Brunswick Campus, following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m., today, Oct. 13, at St. Simons United Methodist Church with the Rev. Allen M. Baker and the Rev. Thomas P. Dent officiating. Entombment will follow in Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens Mausoleum on St. Simons Island, with Staff Sgt. Andrew Sloan, Ogden Sloan, John Robert Wright Jr., Bin Brandon, Justin Burke, Shea Lambert, William “Hunt” Huntley and Jim Medberry serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Alan S. Fogg Sr., Steven M. Fogg, Sherrod G. McCall Jr., Brooks Sheldon, Robin Hood, George Dunbar and Wright Woodall.

Born in Knoxville, Tenn. and raised in Atlanta, Ga. and Miami Beach, Fla., she had been a resident of Sea Island since 1976 and was also a resident of Miami, Fla. for 32 years. Her family said she was an avid equestrian during her childhood and teenage years. She competed with her father’s John Madison Ogden Stables in Atlanta. She attended Sullins College in Bristol, Va., as well as the University of Miami, where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She later served on the board at Sullins College.

She was a homemaker and an active philanthropist, raising money for many notable charities. She was a former co-chair of the Heart Ball in Miami and was also a member of the Coral Gables Cotillion, Beaus Arts, Riviera Country Club, the Bath Club and Lagorce Country Club. She was also a former member of the First Methodist Church of Coral Gables. In her later years, she was a member of Golden Isles Presbyterian Church on St. Simons Island. She was also a founder and supporter of the St. Simons Christian School, formerly known as The Whitefield School.

Her family also said that she enjoyed being outdoors, particularly skeet shooting and quail hunting at their family’s JMO Ranch, located in Sumter County, Fla.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Leonard Gerald “Jerry” Wright of Sea Island, Ga.; two daughters, Dottie Lynn Gardner and husband Grady of Green Cove Springs, Fla. and Janey Sloan and husband Andrew of St. Simons Island, Ga.; a son, John Robert Wright Sr. and wife Judy of St. Simons Island, Ga.; a sister, Betty Ogden Garvey of Miami, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Becky Gardner Brandon and husband Bin of Knoxville, Tenn., Ann Gardner Burke and husband Justin of Chattanooga, Tenn., Aubrey Sloan Lambert and husband Shea of Tallahassee, Fla., Staff Sgt. Andrew Wright Sloan of Abilene, Texas and Ogden Hope Sloan, John Robert Wright Jr. and Morgan Elizabeth Wright, all of St. Simons Island, Ga.; and six great-grandchildren, Gracyn Brandon, Elizabeth Brandon and Finley Brandon, all of Knoxville, Tenn., Caroline Burke and Gardner Burke of Chattanooga, Tenn. and Dallas Lambert III of Tallahassee, Fla.

A visitation was held on Monday in the chapel at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home.
