Tennis team third in state tournament

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County Tennis Association 18U Intermediate Gold team finishes third out of 14 teams the USTA Team Tennis State Championships in Macon.

The CTA 18U team lost a hard -fought semifinal match against Macon on Sunday.

The overall scoring is based on total number of games won instead of matches won.

So even though Colquitt won three of five matches, it lost in games 33-29 to the eventual champion Macon team.

Leading the way for Colquitt County was the girls doubles team of Constance Terrell and Rachel Funderburk, which defeated Jessica Rigdon and Holly Stephens 4-3, 3-4, 10-2, and the mixed doubles team of Terrell and Blake Jenkins, which defeated Julie Allen and Kahai Hall 4-1, 4-2.

Carli Hester won at girls singles over Laney Joiner 4-3, 0-4, 10-4.

Jacob Tompkins lost a hard-fought match at boys singles to Mitchell Midkiff 3-4, 3-4, and Bo Blalock and Brandon Oaks were defeated at boys doubles 0-4, 2-4.

Overall, Colquitt County finished 5-0 in matches, 20-5 in individual matches, won 40 sets and lost 14 and were 171–109 in games.

Macon defeated the Camilla team, which also plays out of the CTA association, in the tournament finals.

“Overall, the kids had a wonderful experience and played great against some very good competition, we couldn’t be more proud of the way they represented Moultrie and Colquitt Co. at the state level,” said Captain David Oaks.

Oaks added, “CTA will have a fall session beginning in September and hopes to take four teams (high school and middle school boys and girls) to the USTA Georgia Schools District Tournament on Nov. 21-23 at Valdosta State University.”
