MOULTRIE — Moultrie police officers apprehended seven people after a fight turned into what was called a “near riot scene” Sunday afternoon.

Derrick Murray, 28, of 1017 Joe Louis Ave., was charged with duty to obey an officer and resisting arrest. Kelvin Gerrard Pollard, 32, of 620 Fourth Ave. S.W., was charged with duty to obey an officer. Tamela Pollard Lewis, 36, of 1114 Sixth Ave. N.W., Jimmie Demetrius Merritt, 34, of 901 Fifth Ave. S.E., Khalil Spradley, 31, of 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Apt. A, Anterrio T. Merritt, 17, of 290 Honey Bear Road in Norman Park, and Claressa L. Williams, 32, of 297 Middle Brooks St. in Norman Park, were each charged with disorderly conduct, the second disorderly conduct charge for Spradley and Williams.

Moultrie police officers were called to Moultrie Manor Apartments on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive about 2:20 p.m. Sunday about a possible fight. When the first officer arrived, he saw two people holding an object that appeared to be a metal pipe, and the officer ordered them to drop the pipes.

The officer spoke with Williams, who stated Jimmie Merritt allegedly threatened to kill her children. While the officer was speaking with Williams, several other people allegedly were being loud and trying to give the other officers on scene their account of the incident.

The officer was able to find the incident started with Jimmie Merritt and Khalil Spradley allegedly using profanity toward Merritt’s son, Anterrio. The officer spoke with Jimmie, and he stated he had gone to the church to confront his son about some text messages and some money owed him. He allegedly stated he had used profanity toward his son during the confrontation, police reports stated.

Anterrio Merritt came up to Jimmie Merritt while the officer was getting information, and he reportedly had some type of silver item in his right hand. The officer pulled his gun, thinking the object could be a knife or gun, but Anterrio revealed the item was a wrench.

When the officers went to place Anterrio Merritt under arrest, a large group of people came up behind the officers and were yelling loudly. A second officer was struggling with another man, identified as Murray, to place him under arrest, forcing the officer to use his taser. The scene was described by officers as “chaotic and beginning to border on riot status,” and the remaining arrests were made because of their alleged loud and boisterous manner during the incident, the reports said.
