MOULTRIE — When Rush Propst took over the Colquitt County High football program earlier this year, he vowed to put plenty of emphasis on the sub-varsity teams.

He has done that, beefing up the staffs of the middle school and ninth grade programs and montoring those teams’ progress closely.

One area he especially wanted to improve was the junior varsity team, which had not won a game the last three seasons.

This year’s team already has won three games as it heads to Douglas today to meet Coffee in its final game of the season.

“I’m elated by the JV success,” Propst said on Wednesday.

“The JV season has really been a success. This has really given a lot of guys a lot of experience.”

The junior varsity team was bolstered by the addition of some 16 players who moved up from the ninth-grade team several weeks ago.

And it will be a freshman, Alex Littleton, who is expected to take most of the snaps at quarterback today.

Propst said sophomore Tyler Brown, who played most of the varsity game against Houston County last Friday and threw for 262 yards, also will get some playing time against JV Trojans.

Some seven offensive linemen are expected to see action in Douglas today, including Xavier Ward, Trenton Rhodes, Preston Mobley, Harden Mobley, Tommy Marshall, Whit Benton and Justin Bates.

Quan Jones will work in the backfield.

Among the receivers expected to play are Ty Smith, Stephen Brown, Diamonte Ridley, Darious Love and Hayden Kudela.

On the defensive front, Brett Smith, Zack Cannon, Rashawn Hunt and Dehryan Arnold will play.

Beau Weathers and Ridge Underwood will get long looks at linebacker.

Tre Scott, Audrick Ponder, Tre DeBruce, Payne Newsome and Jeremy Downs will play in the secondary.

Players are allowed to participate in six quarters a week.

The varsity has given considerable playing time to a number of freshmen and sophomore this season.

Ninth-grader Bryce Giddens earned the starting job at center part way through the season.

Fellow freshmen Ty Smith, Tae Avery and Brett Smith have seen some quality Friday-night playing time as well.

Among the sophomores who Prospt and his staff have counted on this season in varsity action are Tyler Brown, Diamonte Ridley, Rich Tyndall, Payne Newsome, Amel Magwood, Stephen Moore, Tevin King, Mark Lindsey, Garrett Brewer, Trey Rhymes, Blake Stamps, Hayden Kudela, Rashawn Hunt, Zack Cannon and Quan Daniels.

PACKERS NOTES: The 13 Colquitt County seniors will be introduced before Friday’s season finale against Northside at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.

Those seniors are C.J.Copeland, John Michael Harrison, Travon Littleton, Eric Key, Monrico Robinson, Corzell Ellerson, Jared Knowles, Justin Jones, Patrick Johnson, Weston Gittens, R.J. Taylor, Travon Jackson and Patrick Phillips.

Propst indicated that Harrison will start at quarterback.

The left-hander has thrown for 2,167 yards and 16 touchdowns in his career.

Key will finish out an outstanding career in which he has scored 16 touchdowns.

Taylor will playing his final game after starting on the offensive line the last two seasons. …

The other Region 1-AAAAA games on what will be the final night of regular season include Lowndes at Warner Robins, Tift County at Coffee and Houston County at Valdosta. …
