Propst promises changes

MOULTRIE – After a 39-14 road loss to Warner Robins on Friday that he called embarrassing, Colquitt County Coach Rush Propst said the Packers may have different look when they return to McConnell-Talbert Stadium next Saturday to meet Houston County.

“There will be changes,” Propst said Friday after the Packers lost their fifth straight game to fall to 3-5 overall and 0-5 in Region 1-AAAAA. “A youth movement is in full swing.

“We probably won’t start any seniors on defense. And the only seniors who will probably start on offense will be R.J. (Taylor) and Eric (Key).”

A number of young players received significant playing time on Friday, including sophomore quarterback Tyler Brown, who completed 15-of-24 passes for 156 yards and touchdown after relieving starter John Michael Harrison, who was 12-for-18 for 132 yards and led the team on a second-quarter scoring drive.

Freshman running back Quon Jones had a run from scrimmage and caught a pass and fellow ninth-grader Ty Smith caught a 23-yard pass for a first down.

But those bright spots could not take away from a performance that included three fumbles, including one in the end zone that resulted in Warner Robins touchdown; a blocked punt for a safety; three sacks; minus-24 yards rushing; and a defensive performance that gave up 6 yards a carry to the Demons.

The Packers longest rush from scrimmage was 6 yards. Warner Robins’ first punt came with 10:26 left in the fourth quarter, which was played under a running clock after the Demons led 39-7 heading into the final 12 minutes.

And it all started when Chris Mallard bolted 42 yards on the Demons first play of the game.

“It can’t get any worse,” Propst said. “We’re at rock bottom. There’s no pride, no desire, no want-to. That’s the most embarrassed I’ve been.

“There’s not a single thing I’m happy with, including myself.”

The Packers fumbled away two of their first three possessions and trailed 16-0 at the end of the first quarter and 25-7 at the half.

The Demons snapped the ball in their own territory just four times in the first half and only three times in the third quarter.

The Packers’ first quarter performance was especially discouraging.

During those 12 minutes, Colquitt gave up the 42-yard run on the first play; lost two fumbles; gave up a 12-yard sack; ran from punt formation for a 6-yard loss; had illegal participation and false start penalties; and had a holding penalty, which was declined.

“We just didn’t come to play,” Propst said. “I’ve said it before, we just don’t have that burning desire to win.”

Warner Robins went into the game with a 2-2 region record and was 4-3 overall, but the victory kept the Demons in the race for a playoff berth.

Lowndes is now 5-0 in the region after Friday’s 52-14 victory over Houston County. Northside, which defeated Tift County 30-14 on Thursday, and Coffee, which downed Valdosta 35-18 on Friday, are 4-1.

Tift County and Warner Robins are battling for a playoff berth at 3-2. Valdosta is now just 1-4 with its only region victory a 42-39 win over the Packers.

Colquitt County and Houston County, both winless in the region, will battle to stay out of the region cellar on Saturday.

“It’s going to come down to which team wants it most,” Propst said.

PACKER NOTES: Warner Robins safety Cameron Eddy hada big night, recovering two fumbles, one for a touchdown, and blocking the punt for the safety.

Tyler Dismuke was not expected to play after needing more than 20 stitches to close a gash on his left knee last weekend, but he was able to kickoff and punt.

Amel Magwood’s first-quarter interception was just the second of the year for the Packers. Corzell Ellerson had one against Coffee.

Roberson led the Packers with eight catches for 73 yards and a touchdown.

Smith, Jones and Stephen Brown all had their first receptions of the year.
