MOULTRIE — When the Colquitt County junior varsity football team scored touchdowns on its first two possession of its game against Thomas County Central on Thursday at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium, it looked as if the Packers were well on their way to a profitable afternoon.
But after scoring that second touchdown with 27 seconds left in the first quarter, Colquitt did not score again.
And Central scored three times in the second half, including the game-winning touchdown with 4:30 left to take a 21-14 victory.
Colquitt County quarterback Tyler Brown completed 16-of-26 passes for 247 yards and a pair of first-quarter touchdown passes.
But the Packers managed just 59 yards in the second half.
On the first play after the opening kickoff, Brown completed an 18-yard pass to Damien Bentley and two plays later connected with Diamonte Ridley, who raced down the sidelines to complete a 43-yard touchdown pass.
Rich Tyndall’s conversion put the Packers up 7-0 less than two minutes into the contest.
After forcing a Yellow Jacket punt, the Packers drove 67 yards to another score, this one coming on a 5-yard flip from Brown to ninth-grade receiver Ty Smith.
Again, Tyndall converted and the 14-0 lead lasted the half.
But on the first play of Central’s second possession of the second half, Zack Kerbo broke off a 48-yard touchdown run right up the middle and Eric Dodson’s conversion cut the Packers lead in half.
The Packers appeared ready to make another move on its next possession when Brown hit Quon Jones with a screen pass. Jones ran for 21 yards to the Central 44, but coughed the ball up when he was tackled.
The Yellow Jackets took the ball and drove for a tying score, getting a 5-yard scoring pass from Eric McCray to Sedarian Warren.
Dodson’s extra-point attempt hit the left upright, but then went through to knot the game at 14-14 with 50 seconds left in the third quarter.
Central forced the Packers to punt away their next possession and the Jackets drove for what proved to be the game-winning score.
The Yellow Jackets converted on a fourth-and-6 at the Packers 34 when Dodson completed a 15-yard pass to Eric Hollis and six plays later Warren scored from a yard out with 4:30 remaining.
The Packers had one more possession and managed a first down on a 27-yard completion from Tyler Brown to Stephen Brown.
But Colquitt was forced to turn the ball over on downs four plays later.
Eight Packers caught passes, including Jones, who had five receptions for 69 yards.
The JV Packers, now 2-2, will play host to Bainbridge at 5 p.m. next Thursday.
They will conclude their season at Coffee on Nov. 6.
