MOULTRIE — Taking advantage of its off-week, the Colquitt County High coaching staff took a ride up I-75 to Warner Robins last Friday to watch the Warner Robins-Houston County football.
The participants in that game — won by Warner Robins 24-7 — are the Packers next two opponents.
In fact the trip by the staff to McConnell-Talbert Stadium was the first of three straight weekend treks to Warner Robins.
The Packers will face the Demons there this Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Colquitt County will travel to Warner Robins again the next weekend to face Houston County on Saturday, Nov. 1.
The Colquitt County coaches will put aside the information it gleaned about Houston County and will concentrate on the Demons and try to get ready to end their team’s four-game losing streak on Friday.
What they saw was a Warner Robins team that was forced to use a new running back as the focus of its wing-T offense and he responded with 121 yards on 15 carries.
Junior Dominique Primus was not listed among the top 20 rushers in Region 1-AAAAA before the Demons and Bears squared off, but he ripped up the Houston County defense, scoring a touchdown in the process.
Warner Robins rushed for 242 yards and also got 40 yards from fullback Dominic Butts and 47 from wingback Chris Mallard.
Butts scored on a 5-yard run in the third quarter. Mallard had a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Warner Robins quarterback W.J. McAllister threw the ball just eight times, completing three for 39 yards and no touchdowns.
“They run the wing-T and do just enough with it to score some points,” Colquitt County Coach Rush Propst said.
Primus was pressed into service when starter Jonathan Jackson suffered an injury that will sideline him for the rest of the season.
The Demons also another proficient night from senior kicker David Clark, who hit a 26-yard field goal, converted after all three Warner Robins touchdowns, drove all five of his kickoffs into the end zone and had three strong punts, one of which went out of bounds at the Houston County 6-yard line.
Propst said the Demons are talented on defense. Against Houston County, they also were fortunate.
The Bears rushed for 238 yards and 20 first downs, but managed only a 6-yard scoring run by Garrick Davis in the fourth quarter after they trailed 17-0.
In the second half, the Bears controlled the football, snapping the ball 40 time and notching 14 first downs, while rushing 29 times for 163 yards.
But the Demons survived and raised their record to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in the region as they try to grab one of the region’s four playoff berths.
Warner Robins opened the season with a 28-0 victory over Wheeler and has alternated wins and losses since then.
Following their meeting with the Colquitt County on Friday, Warner Robins will close the regular season with games against Northside and Lowndes at McConnell-Talbert Stadium.
Warner Robins has already exceeded the number of wins it posted in its disappointing 2007 campaign, when it posted a 3-7 record.
That was the school’s first losing season since 1966.
A win over the Packers would assure the Demons of not having two losing seasons back-to-back.
Warner Robins has split its two games with Colquitt County since joining Region 1-AAAAA in 2006, losing 24-14 at home that year and winning 35-7 last year in Moultrie.
The Demons are 5-10 overall against Packers teams.
The Packers, 3-4 overall and 0-4 in Region 1-AAAAA, are hoping a week off will help them get ready for what would be their first victory since the 38-0 victory over Wayne County on Sept. 12.
After opening with victories over Randolph-Clay, Thomasville and Wayne County, the Packers have fallen to Lowndes (51-0), Coffee (46-20), Valdosta (42-39) and Tift County (37-20).
PACKERS NOTES: The Colquitt County junior varsity team also has three more games.
The JV Packers will meet Thomas County Central at 5 p.m. Thursday at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.
On Thursday, Oct. 30, the Colquitt JV will play host to Bainbridge. In its season finale, the JV team will travel to Coffee on Nov. 6.
