Propst pleased with practices

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High football staff put its players through two rigors practice sessions on Monday and Tuesday as the team tries to erase the memory of a humbling 46-20 home loss to Coffee last Friday and aims at a victory over Valdosta on Friday.

“We hit and tackled and blocked, and blocked and tackled and hit,” said Packers coach Rush Propst. “We can’t squeeze that lemon any more.”

Propst had been especially upset by his team’s poor tackling and its inability to rush the football against Coffee last Friday in a loss that drops the Packers to 0-2 in Region 1-AAAAA.

“Last week we were practicing like we were at Hoover and that was my fault,” Propst said. “We are gettng back to competition at every position and productivity at practice.”

Propst said the team backed off practice a little last week, but probably should not have.

“We’re not experienced enough,” he said. “We need more mental preparation and that’s my fault.”

The Packers face a long road to qualifying for a berth in the playoffs, but Propst said his team needs to keep the playoffs as a goal.

A team gets at least one extra week of practice when it makes the playoffs.

The game with Valdosta will feature two teams whose postseason aspirations will dim considerably with a loss.

Like the Packers, the Wildcats are 3-2 overall, but have lost both their Region 1-AAAAA games.

Valdosta was shut out 7-0 by Warner Robins last Friday and trailed Northside 28-0 the week before before scoring twice in the fourth quarter.

Also on Friday, Northside will visit Lowndes in battle of defending state champions who are each 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the region.

Tift County (1-1, 3-2) will travel to McConnell-Talbert Stadium to take on Houston County (0-2, 3-2) on Friday and on Saturday Coffee (2-0, 5-0) will travel north to meet Warner Robins (1-1, 3-2).

PACKERS NOTES: Colquitt County will be without the services of senior defensive tackle Patrick Johnson for the rest of the season.

Johnson, who was at Tuesday’s practice on crutches, suffered a knee injury during a practice last week.
