MOULTRIE — Joseph W. King III, M.D., a board certified obstetrics and gynecology physician, has joined the medical staff of Colquitt Regional Medical Center and will open his new practice on Oct. 1.

The new office, which will be named First Choice Women’s Care, will be located at 15 Hospital Park, across 31st Avenue from Colquitt Regional in the building previous occupied by Dr. Michael Sharon and the Azalea Women’s Center in Hospital Park.

Dr. King, a native of Nashville, Tenn., received his undergraduate degree from Tennessee State University and his doctorate at Meharry Medical School in Nashville. He completed an internship and residency at Saint John Hospital in Detroit, Mich.

For the past five years, King has been on the medical staff of Midwest Regional Hospital in Oklahoma City, Okla., where he is chairman of the OB-GYN department and serves on the credentials committee and executive committee at the 300-bed hospital.

Before moving to Oklahoma, King had a private practice in Americus for 16 years and served on the active medical staff of Sumter Regional Hospital and had courtesy staff privileges at Flint River Community Hospital in Montezuma. During his tenure in Americus, he served on the board of trustees and as chairman of the credentials committee for Sumter Regional as well as chairman of the OB/GYN department at Sumter Regional.

King said moving to Moultrie he will be returning home near where he had practiced for most of his career and where his family still lives.

“I’m coming back close to where I have family living in Bainbridge and Tallahassee,” he said. “This is a very friendly community where I will be close to my family roots.”

King said he has lived his entire life in a healthcare environment.

“I am a third generation graduate of Meharry Medical College,” he said. “My grandfather, father, brother and I are all graduates of Meharry.” King said the other family members graduated from Meharry’s School of Dentistry.

King and his wife, Barbara, have four children, ages 31, 23, 21 and 18.

King is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and has held memberships in the Oklahoma Medical Association, American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Georgia Obstetrics and Gynecological Society, American Fertility Society, Southern Medical Association, National Medical Association, American Medical Association, Sumter County Medical Society and American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists. While practicing in Americus, King established the Joseph W. King III scholarship, which was presented to the graduating high school senior with the highest grade point average and studying either healthcare, science or mathematics.
