MOULTRIE — Jebb Cato and John Michael Harrison, a pair of Colquitt County underclassmen who are expected to lead the Packers again next season, have been named to the 2008 All-Region 1-AAAAA baseball team.

Region champion Valdosta took both of the league’s top individual honors.

University of Georgia-bound Earl Daniels was named the Player of the Year and Bart Shuman was selected as the Coach of the Year.

Daniels, a right-handed pitcher, was dominant on the mound this spring, going 12-1 and striking out 131 batters. He also was named to the All-Region first team as a junior in 2007.

Shuman, who has been the Valdosta head coach for 10 seasons, led the Wildcats to their first region championship since 1997.

Valdosta advanced to the state’s Final Four before being eliminated by Walton in three games and finished with a 28-7 record.

Cato, the Packers junior third baseman, was one of six infielders named to the All-Region 1-AAAAA first team.

His .420 batting average ranked him sixth in the region and he was 14th in the region with 18 runs batted in.

Cato led the Packers with 29 hits, including eight doubles and a pair of home runs. He also stole nine bases in 10 attempts.

Harrison, the Packers outfielder/pitcher, received honorable mention on the All-Region team.

He led the Packers with 25 runs batted in, which tied him for fourth in the region with Valdosta’s Jamie Turner. Also a junior, Harrison led the Packers in triples, with three; home runs, with four; and extra base hits with 12.

Also named to the All-Region first team was Valdosta junior pitcher Kyle Rowe, who posted a 13-1 record.
