MOULTRIE — After dropping its state tournament-opener on Wednesday, the Colquitt County 14-and-under all-stars faced winning six games to claim the championship.

Colquitt County got a third of the way toward that goal on Thursday, defeating Calhoun 12-5 and Thomson 13-1 to remain alive in the losers bracket.

A little revenge might be in order when Colquitt County takes the field at 4:30 p.m. today in its next losers bracket game.

The all-stars will face Dublin, the team that dealt them an 8-5 defeat in the tournament opener.

In Thursday’s first game, Colquitt County jumped out to a 6-0 first-inning lead and went on to eliminate Calhoun.

The all-stars banged out 15 hits, including three each by Vann Pitts, Matt Creech and Blake Bennett.

Bryce Giddens had a pair and Aubrey McCarty, Corey Moore, Zac Wheeler and Austin Dykes each had one hit.

Tyler Yost, Kent and Pitts each pitched two innings. Creech pitched the seventh. The quartet allowed just two hits.

Against Thomson, Colquitt County needed just four innings to make sure it was one of the four teams remaining in the eight-team, double-elimination tournament.

Moore started and did not allow a hit over three innings. Dillon Presley gave up one hit in the fourth.

Pitts and Creech each had a double and a single. Dykes, Giddens, Moore, Kent and McCarty each had one hit.

McCarty’s hit was a double.
