MOULTRIE — Austin Mercer gave up just one infield hit and struck out 10 as the Colquitt County A all-stars shut out Crisp County 8-0 on Tuesday in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association’s sub-District III tournament being played at the Magnolia Sports Complex.

The victory sends Colquitt County into today’s 5:30 p.m. final winners bracket game against the Americus Ice.

The winner will advance to Thursday’s 5:30 p.m. championship game.

Americus Ice advanced with a 14-6 five-inning victory over Colquitt County B on Tuesday. Americus got two big home runs in the game: a grand slam by Clint Collins and a three-run shot by Jon Adkins.

Colquitt County B dropped to the losers bracket, where it eliminated the Americus Spartans 14-6 in a late game Tuesday.

Dalton Dillon had two home runs in the game, giving him four in the three games the Colquitt County B team has played.

Crisp County was eliminated in a losers bracket game against Thomasville when it forfeited a 14-9 lead because of a tournament pitching rule violation.

Colquitt County B and Thomasville will meet in a losers bracket game at 5:30 p.m. today.

Mercer was outstanding against Crisp County on Tuesday, stranding two runners in each of the first three innings, then retiring the final seven batters in a row. The right-hander walked a batter in the first, second and third innings and gave up an infield single in the second.

But he got strikeouts to end the first and second innings and got a 2-3 out to end the third.

But until the bottom of the fifth, the only support Mercer had was a second-inning home run to right by Preston Berry.

But Colquitt County broke the game open in the fifth, scoring seven runs to put the five-inning mercy rule into effect. Andy Bush started the inning with a single and Colby Reneker walked. Gabe Mobley drove in the first run of the inning on an infield single. Reneker scored on an error.

Mack Hathcock doubled in Tony Simpson, who was running for Gabe Mobley, and later scored when Daniel Mobley reached on an error. John Gray then clubbed a two run homer to make it 7-0. After Clayton Brown doubled, Berry ended the game with a single to score Brown.
