MOULTRIE — Tristan Wells will remember his first USA Diving Junior Regional.

Competing in the 11-and-under age group, the Moss Farms diver scored a 174.85 to edge Atlanta Diving Association’s Owen Moncino on Saturday to win the gold medal on the 1-meter board.

“He missed one dive, but came back strong,” said Moss Farms Coach Ed Goodman, obviously pleased with his young diver’s performance.

Wells got the only gold medal for Moss Farms on Saturday in the second day of 2008 Summer Junior Region 7 Championships being held at the Moose Moss Aquatic Center.

But Diving Tigers took two silver and two bronze medals.

In the 12-13 girls 1-meter competition, Elizabeth Ann Kirkland finished second behind Wallace Layland of Team Orlando Diving.

Layland scored a 261.40. Kirkland was just behind at 254.60.

Kirkland and Layland will face each other again today in the 3-meter competition, which begins at 9 a.m.

In the 16-18 girls 3-meter event, Kelsey Goodman of Moss Farms and Thea Vock of Team Orlando reversed their 1-meter finishes.

Vock won 3-meter on Saturday, scoring a 427.50. Goodman was just over five points back at 422.45.

On Friday in the 1-meter event, Goodman took the gold medal with Vock winning the silver.

“Kelsey’s 422 is usually good enough to win,” Ed Goodman said. “Five points difference. In nine dives, that less than a point a dive. “It was close. You’ve got to have a lot of respect for Thea. She’s a gamer.”

Ann Perry Blank continues her fine work this spring, winning the bronze medal with a 375.90.

“She’s diving as good as I can remember,” Ed Goodman said. “She really dove well today. She had an 8 on an inward 2 1/2. That’s a marker for her.”

Ann Perry’s brother Owen also took home a bronze medal on Saturday, finishing third in the 16-18 boys 1-meter.

Hunter Torrance of Team Orlando was first with a 425.55 and was followed by Thomas Neubacher, also of Team Orlando, who was second with a 410.50.

Blank, who is heading to the University of Georgia, had a 403.10. Moss Farms Diving’s Henry Norman was seventh with a 262.25.

All Moss Farms divers who entered events have qualified to dive in the Zone Championships, which also will be held in Moultrie on July 10-13.
