MOULTRIE — A Moultrie man reported he was beaten and robbed by an unknown group of men Sunday night. Officers, however, were given two conflicting accounts of what happened in the incident.
An officer responded to the intersection of Fifth Street Northwest and First Avenue Northwest at 9:38 p.m. Sunday about a man lying on the ground and bleeding. The officer found a Hispanic man, later identified as Gilberto Vasquez, on the ground and he stated he was okay but had head and back pain, police reports said.
When asked what happened, Vasquez stated he had been jumped by three or four black men and was beaten with a bat or a stick as he and a friend walked at the corner. The group of men also stole an unknown amount of cash from Vasquez during the incident, the report said.
Vasquez was taken to Colquitt Regional Medical Center, and the officer spoke with him a second time while he was being treated. Vasquez then told the officer he and the friend had been in Northwest Moultrie to buy drugs, the report further stated. It was while trying to buy drugs the group of men beat him and stole his money. The friend, however, could not be immediately interviewed because of a language barrier.
