Valdosta reaches Final Four

MOULTRIE — For the first time since 1999, the Valdosta High baseball team has advanced to the state semifinals.
The Wildcats swept Kell 7-5 and 4-0 on Tuesday and will meet Walton in a Final Four series that will begin on Monday.
Valdosta, the Region 1-AAAAA champions and the lone Region 1 team remaining in the postseason, has swept three straight series on the way to the semifinals.
The Wildcats eliminated Bradwell Institute 10-2 and 17-0 in the first round, the ousted Luella 7-5 and 6-4.
On Tuesday, the No. 5-ranked Wildcats got outstanding pitching performances from Earl Daniels and Kyle Rowe to sweep the No. 3-ranked Longhorns.
Rowe pitched a three-hit shutout in the second game, sending the Wildcats to the Final Four for the first time since Bart Shuman’s first season as the team’s head coach.
Walton has advanced to the semifinals by eliminating Parkview in two games in its opener, before needing three games to oust Mill Creek. On Tuesday, the Raiders had little trouble with Camden County, winning 11-1 and 8-0.
If Valdosta can get by Walton, it would play host to the state championship series.
Coach Tony Kirkland’s South Effingham Mustangs have reached the Class AAA semifinals for the fourth time in the last five seasons, eliminating Oconee County this week by 16-6 and 12-10 scores.
South Effingham, ranked No. 7, has defeated Westover, Henry County and Oconee and will take a six-game postseason winning streak into its semifinal series with No. 2-ranked Cartersville.
Cartersville needed three games to escape Columbus High in a quarterfinal series in Columbus.
In South Effingham’s sweep of Oconee County, Mustangs senior catcher John Roberts hit his 16th home run of the season and now has driven in 63 runs this year.
Lee County, coached by former Colquitt County assistant coach Rob Williams, was eliminated in the state Class AAAA quarterfinals by Salem. The Trojans finish the season with a 22-10 record
Salem, ranked No. 10 in Class AAAA. will advance to play Loganville in a Final Four series.
