MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County boys soccer team’s season ended in excruciating fashion on Tuesday in Sharpsburg, where the Packers were eliminated from the Class AAAAA tournament by East Coweta on penalty kicks.

The match was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation and at the end of both overtimes.

But the Indians outscored the Packers in the penalty kick shootout to advance to a quarterfinal match against the Etowah-Centennial winner.

Region 4-AAAAA champion East Coweta, which defeated Lithonia 2-1 in its opener, will take a 14-5 record to the next round.

The Packers, who finished third in Region 1-AAAAA with a 7-5 record, completed their season with a 10-10 mark.

This is the second year in a row the Packers have advanced to the second round of the playoffs.

The tall and aggressive Indians scored first in the first half on a header off a corner kick.

About two minutes into the second half, Hudson Wrenn answered for the Packers with a header of his own. Spencer Clayton got the assist.

“They were a real physical team and that was a problem for us, being as small as we are,” Packers coach Rob Craft said. “We had some opportunities early, but we just couldn’t quite capitalize.”

Craft said he was pleased with the way his team performed throughout the season.

“It’s difficult for them to realize now what they’ve done,” Craft said. “It’s frustrating, but they’ve got nothing to hang their heads about. I’m proud of the effort they put forth. We’re losing a good group just like we did last year. But we’ve got a good group coming back. Two years in a row we’ve made it to the second round. Maybe next year we can make to the next round.”
