MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County baseball team’s fading playoff hopes took another blow on Friday when Warner Robins broke open a close game with a five-run fifth inning and went on to a 9-4 Region 1-AAAAA victory at Ike Aultman Field at Packer Park.
The loss drops the Packers to 8-12 overall and 2-7 in the region.
And combined with Lowndes’ 3-2 victory over Tift County, the loss drops the Packers into last place in the region.
Warner Robins raises its region record to 6-3 and moves into second place. Valdosta kept its grip on first place by defeating Houston County 8-5 to raise its region record to 8-1.
Colquitt led 4-3 after four innings with Andrew McDowell holding the Demons to just two earned runs.
But Warner Robins sent nine batters to the plate, got five hits and took advantage of a costly error to score five times in the top of the fifth to take an 8-5 lead.
Jesse Scott, Warner Robins’ junior starting pitcher, then held the Packers hitless and scoreless over the final three innings. Scott raised his record to 5-2 for the season. He took a 1.58 ERA into the game.
Warner Robins scored in the top of the first off starter Andrew McDowell on a leadoff double by Justin Burke and a single by Alex Fant.
The Packers got two in the bottom of the inning. John Michael Harrison singled in one and a throwing error by Demons catcher Zack Watson allowed Blake Cato to score.
McDowell struck out the side in the second, but Warner Robins tied the game in the third on a two-out double by Nathan Poole and Fant’s second RBI single.
Again, Colquitt answered with Jebb Cato putting the Packers on top with a two-out single in the third that scored Corey Hancock.
Warner Robins tied the game at 3-3 in the top of fourth on an unearned run driven in on a two-out double by Matt Butterick.
Ben Cauthen led off the Packers fourth with a double to center and one out later scored on a sacrifice fly by Bo Williams to give the Packers a 4-3 lead.
But Warner Robins put the game away against McDowell in the fifth. Burke, the sophomore center fielder who took a .377 bating average into the game, ripped his second double of the night to open the inning.
When Poole’s bunt got past McDowell and first baseman Patrick Taylor, Burke scored from second.
Three hits and an error later, the Demons had scored five runs. They added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.
Colquitt had just three hits: the RBI singles by Harrison and Cato and the double by Cauthen.
Cauthen’s double leading off the fourth was the last Packers hit.
The Packers lost one base runner in the second inning when Williams and designated hitter Mark Lindsey batted out of order.
Lindsey as supposed to have led off the inning, but Williams batted and grounded out. Lindsey walked, but then was ruled out when the error was discovered.
