Soccer Pack plays well, but falls to Brookwood

MOULTRIE — After a disappointing 2-1 loss to Lowndes in Valdosta just 14 hours earlier, the Colquitt County boys soccer team could be excused if it was not at the top of its game when it met Snellville’s Brookwood High at noon Saturday at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.
After all, the loss took a big bite out of Colquitt’s postseason hopes and Brookwood was sending out Class AAAAA’s No. 7 team.
But if the Broncos expected a team struggling just to make the playoffs to roll over for them, they were mistaken.
The Packers allowed just one goal in each half and although they fell 2-0, the team, its coach and its fans could find little to criticize.
“I was as impressed with our team today in a loss as in any win,” Packers coach Rob Craft said. “Everybody played and everybody played well. Maybe we’re a team that plays to the level of its competition.”
The game was the second of four in a five-day period that will continue on Monday with an important Region 1-AAAAA game against against league-leading Warner Robins in Tifton.
On Tuesday, the Packers will play host to Tift County on Senior Night.
“I was really pleased with that, heading into Monday,” said Craft, whose team is now 8-8 overall.
“We played great. I hope that gives us some confidence. We had some opportunities and limited their opportunities.”
Brookwood did not score until it connected on a penalty kick with 1:54 remaining in the first half.
The second goal came with about six minutes remaining.
“When you play hard, you never know what will happen,” Craft said. “I hope they realize they did a good job, regardless of what’s on the scoreboard.”
The Lady Packers had an even bigger challenge against Brookwood’s girls, who are ranked No. 3 in Class AAAAA and brought an 11-2 record to Moultrie.
The Lady Broncos scored their first goal just 62 seconds into the match and went on to a 10-0 victory.
It was ninth shutout of the season for the Brookwood girls, who were coming off a 2-1 loss to No. 1-ranked Parkview.
The Colquitt County girls fall to 7-9 on the season.
