MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County middle school soccer teams took unbeaten records into the South Georgia Athletic Conference tournament on Saturday in Tifton, but after winning their first games, each fell in the championship game to Tift County.
The Colquitt County boys were 11-0-2 heading into the tournament and then defeated Coffee 1-0 to reach the championship game.
Carlos Bautista got the only goal of the Colquitt County-Coffee match.
But in the championship game, Tift County scored a first-half goal on a corner kick and made it stand up for a 1-0 victory.
Colquitt County and Tift County had played a pair of 1-1 ties during the regular season.
“They played well,” said Coach Ben Marion, whose team finishes 12-1-2. “Our sixth- and seventh-graders got an opportunity to play.
“And in 1-0 and 0-1 games, it goes without saying that you got spectacular play from your goalkeeper and Alex Littleton did a wonderful job.”
The Colquitt County middle school girls took a 10-0-3 record into the tournament and blanked Valdosta 2-0 to qualify for the championship game.
Lauren Kelshaw scored the first Lady Packers goal, with an assist going to Alex Norris.
Jordan Hammack scored the second goal. Jade Deloache assisted.
Kelshaw also scored in the first half of the championship game against Tift County, giving her 31 goals this season.
But Tift tied the match and after regulation, the game went to penalty kicks.
Both the Lady Packers and Lady Devils hit all five of the PKs twice before the game went to sudden death.
There Tift County got the goal to win the tournament championship.
The Colquitt County girls finish 11-1-3.
“The girls played really, really well,” said first-year coach P.J. Horne. “I hate that it ended that way.”
Horne praised the performance of keeper Natalie Griffin, especially during the penalty kicks.
“She did an excellent job,” Horne said.
The Colquitt County eighth-grade players, many of whom have played for three years, were honored as the team’s captains for the day.
The Colquitt County girls had defeated Tift County 4-3 and 3-1 during the regular season.
