MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County girls soccer team’s 3-0 victory over Lowndes on Friday at Valwood School does not guarantee the Lady Packers a berth in the state playoffs.
But if Valdosta and Lowndes lose their remaining games, as Lady Packers coach Jimbo Jarvis expects, Colquitt will claim the No. 4 seed to the postseason.
The victory raises the Lady Packers record to 4-6 with region games against Warner Robins on Monday in Tifton and against Tift County at home on Tuesday.
Jarvis said even if the Lady Packers drop both of those games, if Valdosta and Lowndes lose out, Colquitt is in.
Lowndes is now 3-8 and must travel to Warner Robins today.
Valdosta took a 3-7 record into its match with Houston County on Friday and will travel to Coffee on Tuesday.
Jarvis said his team took care of business in a game it needed to win on Friday.
Colquitt’s girls got the only goal they needed just two minutes into the match when a Lindsay Causey shot found the net.
Abbey Taylor made it 2-0 on a free kick and Lacey Webb made it 3-0 when her shot bounced off the post, hit the Lowndes keeper in the back of the leg and bounced into the net.
All three of those goals were scored in the first half.
In the final 40 minutes, Jarvis moved Suzi Hernandez to sweeper and shut down the Lowndes attack.
“Once it got to 3-0, we put it on cruise control,” Jarvis said.
“We played well offensively in the first half and then played well defensively in the second half. I was proud of the way we played.”
While the Lady Packers were putting themselves in a position to reach the postseason, the Colquitt County boys suffered a blow to their playoff aspirations.
Colquitt fell 2-1 to Lowndes in overtime, leaving the Packers, Vikings and Tift County battling for the final three playoff berths.
The Packers must travel to meet Warner Robins at 5:30 p.m. on Monday in Tifton.
The Colquitt will play host to Tift County in an important contest on Senior Night at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium on Tuesday.
The Packers scored first on a goal by Hudson Wrenn, but Lowndes tied it at 1-1 with about a minute left in regulation.
“They pushed hard in the last few minutes,” Packers coach Rob Craft said of the Vikings. “They finally hit the post and it went in.”
The Vikings then won the match with a goal in the first overtime period.
“We had some opportunities,” Craft said. “We hit the post once or twice.
“There was a lot of back and forth. We moved the ball around well, but I don’t think we were consistent throughout the game.
The loss drops the Packers to 8-7 overall and 6-4 in the region. Craft said he thought the Packers would still need a win to qualify for the playoffs.
Tift County took a 6-4 record into its meet with Warner Robins on Friday.
Colquitt County will play host to Class AAAAA power Brookwood today at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.
The girls game will begin at 10 this morning.
The boys game will start around noon.
