MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High baseball team got back to the .500 plateau on Wednesday, taking advantage of 16 walks to defeat Dougherty High 15-3 at the Paul Eames Complex in Albany in a non-Region 1-AAAAA contest.
The victory was the second this season over the Trojans, who fell 12-2 in Moultrie back on March 10.
It also is the second victory this week for the Packers, who still have two more games before Sunday.
Colquitt is now 8-8 overall, but is 2-4 in the region as it prepares to travel to meet Houston County on Friday.
“That will be very big for us,” said Packers coach Eric McCranie. “We need to get the second half pointed in the right direction.
“And a little winning streak would be nice.”
The Packers have yet to mount a three-game winning streak this season, but a victory over the Bears would do that and get the team closer to a playoff berth.
Colquitt also could make it a four-game winning streak if it can beat Houston County and Bartram Trail High out of Jacksonville, Fla., on Saturday.
That game, originally scheduled for noon, will be played instead at 11 a.m. at Ike Aultman Field at Packer Park in deference to Packer players who will attend the prom that night.
The ninth-grade baseball team will play a doubleheader against Crisp County at Ike Aultman Field following the Colquitt County-Bartram Trail game.
On Wednesday, the Packers got eight hits against Dougherty, but, McCranie said, “You don’t have to hit a lot when you walk 16 times.”
Freshman catcher Mark Lindsey had a big game, going 2-for-2 with two doubles and two runs batted in.
Blake Cato was 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs and three stolen bases.
John Michael Harrison was 1-for-5 with a pair of runs batted in and a stolen base.
Jebb Cato and Bo Williams each went 1-for- 2 and Ben Cauthen and Corey Hancock each went 1-for-3.
Freshman Hayden Kudela started on the mound for the Packers and went four innings, giving up one run, which was earned, while walking three and striking out three.
Harrison pitched an inning, giving up no runs and striking out two.
Patrick Taylor finished up, pitching the final two innings, giving up the final two runs and striking out three.
