MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County baseball team hit the ball well, got solid pitching, ran the bases effectively and committed just one error in a 6-1 victory over Americus-Sumter County on Monday in Americus.
Now, Coach Eric McCranie is hoping the Packers can put two strong efforts back-to-back and beat Dougherty High on Wednesday.
The Packers are coming off a pair Jekyll-and-Hyde performances last week in which they defeated Lowndes 3-1 in a Region 1-AAAAA game on Tuesday, then self-destructed on Friday in an 11-2 loss to Tift County.
Monday’s victory raises the Packers record to 7-8 and the team can get to .500 when it meets Dougherty at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Paul Eames Complex in Albany.
Colquitt defeated the Trojans 12-2 at Packer Park on March 10.
On Monday, Andrew McDowell went the first four innings and gave up two hits while striking out four. Corey Hancock finished up, giving up four hits and striking out two as Colquitt defeated Americus-Sumter County for the second time this year.
The Packers also stole five bases and rapped out nine hits.
Hancock had a big night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a triple.
John Michael Harrison was 2-for-3 and homered for the second straight game. He also had a double.
Harrison had a seventh-inning home run against Tift County on Friday.
“He is swinging the bat real well right now,” McCranie said.
Bo Williams was 2-for-3 and Ben Cauthen and Jebb Cato also had base hits.
“We played a lot better,” McCranie said. “We only had one error. We just need to figure out how to play like that more than just one time.”
The game was the first of four for the Packers this week. They also play at Houston County on Friday and will meet Bartram Trail (Fla.) at noon Saturday at Ike Aultman Field.
