Hayes, LSU relay team post national-leading time

Colquitt County’s Armanti Jamal Hayes turned in a split of 45.33 as the LSU 1,600-meters relay team posted a national-leading time of 3:06.11 in the LSU Tiger Relays held last weekend at the Bernie Moore Track Stadium in Baton Rouge.

Also on the relay team are Reuben Twijukye, Elkana Kosgei and Reggie Dardar.

Hayes already has qualified for NCAA region competition in the 200 meters.

Of this and that:

• Former Lady Packer Lindsay Jacobs won a pair of matches when the Abraham Baldwin College women’s tennis team defeated Central Alabama Community College 9-0 on Sunday.

Jacobs defeated Lauren Grogan 6-1, 6-4 at No. singles and teamed with Monica Lalewicz to defeat Grogan and Alex Mangum 8-0 at No. 1 doubles.

Jacobs, a sophomore, is 9-8 in singles and 9-7 in doubles this season.

The Fillies met Georgia Southwestern at home on Wednesday.

• Anne Yearta, Jacobs former Colquitt County teammate, teamed with Sara Vaughters to win 8-4 at No. 2 doubles when the Young Harris College women’s tennis team met Snead State Community College on Friday.

• Fans who visit UGASports.com may have seen a familiar byline on the stories coming out of spring football.

Former Colquitt County High student and Moultrie Observer alumnus Mitch Kimbrell is the website’s football writer.

• Ex-Packer Will Southwell had a single in four trips to the plate for Georgia Southern in the Eagles 3-1 victory over North Florida on Tuesday in Jacksonville.

The Eagles, now 16-10, were at home on Wednesday to face Kennesaw State.

• The Valdosta State University baseball team beat West Alabama 8-7 on Sunday to raise its record to 23-10-1 under first-year coach Greg Guilliams. The Blazers met Georgia College on Wednesday.

Former Packer right-hander Thomas Tripp is 2-1 with a 3.76 ERA in 14 appearances for the Blazers.

• Tony Kirkland’s South Effingham team will take a 10-4 overall record and a 3-0 Region 3-AAA record into Friday’s home game against Hephzibah.

The former Colquitt County assistant, in his fifth season as the Mustangs head coach, has now won 103 games.

The Mustangs are led by catcher John Roberts, who already has 10 home runs and 32 runs batted in.

• The Lee County baseball team is off to an uncharacteristically slow start. The Trojans, under former Packers assistant Rob Williams, are 5-7 overall and 2-1 in Region 1-AAAA.

Lee will travel to meet an outstanding Thomas County Central team on Friday.

• Former Packer Andrew Wallace is batting .320 with eight doubles and seven runs batted in for the Truett-McConnell baseball team.

The freshman left-hander is 1-2 with a 3.46 ERA and 22 strikeouts in 26 innings pitched.
