JV boys advance in region tournament

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County junior varsity boys soccer team defeated Valdosta 2-1 on penalty kicks on Monday in Tifton to advance to Thursday’s 7:30 p.m. Region 1-AAAAA championship game at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, Valdosta went up 1-0. But Colquitt tied it on a shot from about 35 yards out by Giovanny Rico.

When the game was tied at the end of regulation, it went immediately into penalty kick.

Colquitt went first and scored on a shot by Daniel Moreno. After a Valdosta miss, Hector Ramirez scored to make it 2-0.

Valdosta and Colquitt County both missed, then Valdosta scored to make it 2-1. Daniel Badillo then scored to make it 3-1.

When Valdosta missed its next shot, the Packers had won.

The JV boys won three of their last four games to reach the tournament championship game against either Houston County or Warner Robins.

The girls championship game will feature Tift County against Houston County at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the stadium.

Tift advanced with a penalty kicks win over Warner Robins.

Houston County advanced by defeating Colquitt County 3-2 on Monday in Tifton.

Colquitt, which never led, got second-half goals from Lacy Webb and Marla Medina. Medina’s came with 2 1/2 minutes left.
