MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County junior varsity boys soccer team avenged a regular-season loss and the girls team got a shutout on Saturday at Packer Park in the first round of the Region 1-AAAAA tournament.

Five first-round tournament games were played at Packer Park on Saturday.

The second round will be played at Tift County on Monday. The championship games will be played at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.

The JV Packers, who lost 3-2 to Coffee on March 12, kept the Trojans off the new Packer Park scoreboard on Saturday in a 3-0 victory.

Colquitt, now 5-7, will advance to play a second-round match against Valdosta at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Tift County.

Valdosta advanced when it eliminated Tift County on Saturday.

Jose Zunun, who joined the team late this season after competing with the varsity wrestling team, scored a goal in each half to give the Packers a 2-0 lead.

Daniel Moreno assisted on one, Hector Ramirez on the other.

Daniel Badillo scored on a breakaway with 1:11 left in the match to seal it. Moreno got his second assist of the match.

“The defense played wonderful,” said JV coach Ashley Hill. “Our midfield finally stepped up nd did their job.

“That was the most exciting game of the season.”

In the other boys game on Saturday, Warner Robins eliminated Lowndes. The Demons will meet Houston County in Monday’s other tournament semifinal at Tift County.

Houston had a first-round bye.

Lindsey Causey scored three first-half goals to lead the Colquitt County JV girls to a 6-0 victory over Coffee.

The Lady Packers advance to meet Houston County on Monday in Tifton.

Marla Medina assisted on two of Causey’s first-half goals.

Medina had a goal herself in the second half, as did Lacey Webb and Hannah Adair. Causey assisted on Medina’s goal.

Causey now has a team-leading 11 goals for the season.

“The girls played hard from beginning to end,” said Coach Andy Chapura. “I was especially pleased with Marla Medina. She played a spectacular match in the midfield.

“Our goal-keeping was good and our defense was sound.”

In the other girls game on Saturday, Warner Robins eliminated Lowndes. The JV Demonettes will play Tift County in the other semifinal match on Monday.
