MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County boys soccer team will put its Region 1-AAAAA-leading 4-0 record on the line tonight when it travels to Tift County to meet the Blue Devils.
The Packers also will try to keep alive a five-game winning streak that began after a 1-3 start.
The Colquitt County girls, fresh off a 2-1 victory over Coffee, will try to climb above .500 when they tangle with the Lady Devils, who are 3-1 and tied for second place in the region with Houston County, a game back of 4-0 Warner Robins.
The Packers are the only unbeaten team remaining in Region 1-AAAAA and they have done it with sound defense and opportunistic scoring.
Although the Colquitt boys are coming off a 6-0 victory over Coffee on Tuesday, their other three region wins came by 2-1 scores.
One of those, at Coffee, came on a goal by D.J. Vanzant late in overtime, and another, against Lowndes, came on penalty kicks.
The 6-3 Packers have given up just nine goals this season, including three in the four region matches, and have received strong work in the nets in region matches from keeper Trey Brooks.
In 370 minutes in the nets, including matches against Lee County and Westover, Brooks has surrendered just two goals, an average of 0.432 per 80 minutes.
Eight Packers have combined to score the team’s 27 goals, with Vanzant leading with five.
Daniel Garcia, Rich Tyndall and Omar Zapote each have four and Tyler Dismuke, Bret Holden and Beau Holden each have three. Julio Perez has one.
Vanzant also has three assists and leads the team with 13 points. Garcia’s four assists give him 12 points, second on the team.
The Tift County boys will take a 2-2 Region 1-AAAAA record into game, but have lost their last two.
After opening the region part of their schedule with a 4-1 win over Valdosta and a 3-2 win over Coffee, Coach Harlie Foremes’ Blue Devils have fallen to Houston County 5-2 and Lowndes 1-0.
The Colquitt County girls will play their second straight match without coach Jimbo Jarvis, who received a red card in last Friday’s 2-1 loss to Lowndes that requires him to miss two contests.
The Lady Packers overcame their coach’s absence with a 2-1 victory over Coffee on Tuesday, but will face a tougher assignment tonight.
Tift County’s girls have defeated Valdosta and Coffee by 4-1 scores and, after 4-3 loss to Houston County, they defeated Lowndes 3-1 on Tuesday.
The Lady Devils are 5-1 overall.
Colquitt’s girls will take a 5-4 overall record and a 2-2 region mark into today’s match.
With Alba Hernandez out for the season, the Lady Packers are depending more heavily on their midfield and defense.
Carly Banks is the team’s leading scorer with seven goals, including one each in seven of the team’s nine games.
Suzi Hernandez, who got the game-winner against Coffee, has six goals.
Tonight’s matches will be played at the field at Tift County High School and not at Brodie Field.
