MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County middle school soccer teams’ opponents are having difficulty finding a way to defeat the youngest Packers and Lady Packers primarily because they have found it near-impossible to score even one goal.
Both Colquitt County teams took shutout victories over Valdosta on the road on Wednesday to raise their records to 9-0-1.
The shutout was the fifth in a row and seventh of the season for the Lady Packers.
The Colquitt County boys have blanked their last three opponents and have held five foes without a goal.
The Packers needed the shutout on Wednesday in its 1-0 victory.
Coach Ben Marion said keeper Alex Littleton helped keep the shutout in order with several outstanding saves.
Littleton, a linebacker in the Colquitt County middle school football program, was right at home in the match at Valdosta.
“Valdosta was big, fast and physical,” Marion said. “They will do the Valdosta football team proud. We really had to step to the ball. They were often beating us to it.”
Roberto Ruiz scored his fourth goal of the season to give the Packers the victory. Guillermo Torres assisted.
The last goal the Colquitt County middle school girls surrendered came back on March 3 and it was enough to enable Valdosta to come away with a 1-1 tie.
But on Wednesday, Lauren Kelshaw and Camille Sellers scored in the first half and Kelshaw added another in the second while the defense was slamming the door.
Sellers’ goal came off a corner by Alex Norris. Laura Veasey assisted on Kelshaw’s second-half goal, her 26th goal of the season.
Coach P.J. Horne was pleased with the play of midfielders Norris, Brittany Parker and Jordan Hammack.
“Jordan was everywhere on the field,” Horne said.
On defense, Horne said stopper Flora Cencieros played her most aggressive match of the season.
“I have to brag on our defense,” Horne said. “They’re really stepping up. Our midfield and defense kept getting the ball back to our side of the field.”
