MOULTRIE — With a chance to take a three-game winning streak into its Friday Region 1-AAAAA opener against Houston County, the Colquitt County High baseball team managed just five hits in a 6-4 loss to Crisp County on Tuesday in Cordele.
The Packers had battered three Dougherty High pitchers for 15 hits the night before, but Coach Eric McCranie said his batters were unable to adjust to the Cougars pitching as the game wore on.
The Packers did not score until the top of fourth, getting a run that left them with a 2-1 deficit.
But Crisp promptly scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 6-1 lead.
Colquitt scored three in the top of the fifth, but that was all the Packers could manage.
Freshman Cole Pitts started on the mound for Colquitt County and took the loss after giving up four earned runs in 3.1 innings. He surrendered seven hits and three walks and struck out just one.
Andrew McDowell finished up, giving up a hit and walking two while striking out two over the final 2.2 innings.
Blake Cato, Hayden Kudela, Patrick Taylor, William Oliver and McDowell each had one hit.
“We were out in front of everything,” McCranie said.
The Packers are now 4-3 as they prepare to meet Houston County at 7 p.m. Friday at Ike Aultman Field at Packer Park in the Region 1-AAAAA opener for both teams.
McCranie said he expected to start junior left-hander John Michael Harrison on the mound. Harrison would be followed by Corey Hancock and Austin McAlpin.
The Bears, playing under first-year head coach Kenny Yanzetich, took a 2-4 record into Tuesday night’s home game against Lee County.
Also in Region 1-AAAAA on Friday, Tift County will travel to Douglas to meet Coffee and Warner Robins will go down I-75 for a 7 p.m. meeting with Valdosta. Lowndes will be off.
