MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County middle school soccer teams remain undefeated after sweeping Lowndes on Saturday on the road.
Both teams are now 6-0-1 as they prepare for a Monday rematch with Worth County beginning at 4:30 p.m. at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.
The middle school boys won for the third straight time after a 1-1 tie with Tift County on March 1.
The middle school Packers biggest obstacle on Saturday morning was the wind, but they were able to overcome it for a 4-1 victory.
Four Packers scored in the match, with Allen Vargas, Roberton Ruiz, Esequiel Vazquez and Guillermo Torres getting the goals.
Ruiz also added an assist.
Torres leads the middle school Packers with eight goals. Ruiz now has three and Vazquez had four.
Vargas’ goal was his first of the season.
Despite the cold, blustery day, the middle school girls played what Coach P.J. Horne said was their best game of the season in a 7-0 victory.
Lauren Kelshaw scored four times, Alex Norris added two goals and Madison Turner got the other.
Two of Kelshaw’s goals came in the first half. One of Norris’s goals came on a corner, the second time she has scored on a corner this season.
Kelshaw now has 18 goals for the middle school team and has scored two or more goals six times.
Norris now has five goals. Turner’s goal was her fourth of the season.
“We played better today than we have all year,” Horne said. “Everybody stepped it up a notch today.
“It was almost like being cold made everyone play better.”
Also on Saturday, the Colquitt County junior varsity girls fell to Lee County on Saturday morning at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium 3-0.
The JV boys game was canceled.
“We just came out flat and couldn’t move the ball,” junior varsity girls Coach Andy Chapura said. “And then we made three defensive mistakes.
The temperature at game time was 45 degrees, but with 20 mph winds gusting to 36 mph, the wind-chill factor was 37 degrees.
The JV girls were coming off a 1-1 tie with Lee County in Leesburg on Thursday.
Lacey Webb had the Lady Packers goal in the game. It was her third of the season. Lindsey Causey was credited with the assist.
The JV Lady Packers will take a 1-5-1 record into Monday’s 5:30 p.m. game at Tift County. The Colquitt County JV boys, 2-4, will meet the Tift County boys at 7:30 p.m.
