MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County middle schools soccer teams swept a pair of games from Cairo on Thursday at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium, while the junior varsity teams were getting a win and a tie at Lee County.

The junior varsity boys got a goal from Gian Rodriquez with just 1:15 remaining to take a 2-1 victory and snap a four-game losing streak.

The game was played with 25-minute halves because Lee County was forced to use several eighth-grade players.

Lee County took a 1-0 lead on a goal with just 12 seconds remaining in the first half.

But the JV Packers responded quickly after intermission getting a goal from Rodriquez to tie the match at 1-1.

That’s where the score remained until Rodriquez got the game-winner with time winding down.

The goals were the fourth and fifth of the season for Rodriquez as the JV boys raise their record to 2-4.

“The guys were really excited,” Coach Ashley Hill said. “They needed a win.”

The JV girls tied Lee County 1-1 and are now 1-4-1 on the season.

Saturday’s scheduled JV boys game against Lee County has been canceled, Hill said.

In Moultrie, the middle school girls and boys teams remain unbeaten with their second sweep of Cairo in a week.

The middle school Packers and Lady Packers won 5-1 and 4-0 respectively in Cairo on Feb. 28.

The middle school girls duplicated that score on Thursday at the stadium.

The Lady Packers led 2-0 at the half on a pair of Lauren Kelshaw goals.

In the second half, Colquitt got a goal from Laura Veasey, with an assist from Kelshaw, and another from Madison Turner.

Kelshaw’s scores give her 14 goals on the season.

Veasey now has two and Turner three for the Lady Packers, who are 5-0-1.

“Overall, I don’t think we played up to our potential today,” Colquitt County middle school girls coach P. J. Horne said.

Horne added that all team members got a chance to perform.

The Colquitt County middle school boys’ Red team started and took a 3-0 lead before turning things over to the Gold team.

The Gold team held Cairo to two goals and scored one itself.

“Cairo is an extremely well-coached team,” said Colquitt County coach Ben Marion.

Josh Smith scored his first two goals of the season for the middle school Packers.

Carlos Bautista and Alejandro Cardenas scored the others.

Getting assists were Smith, Danny Bastos, Alan Vargas and Guillermo Torres.

The middle school teams will travel to Lowndes on Saturday. The girls will play at 10 a.m. The boys will play at 11:30 a.m.

Colquitt will be back at the stadium on Monday to play host to Worth County, with the girls starting 4:30 p.m.

Colquitt swept Worth County in Sylvester on Feb. 25.
