MOULTRIE — The four previous Colquitt County boys soccer matches had resulted in 2-1 scores, with the Packers winning the last two on late goals.

The Packers made sure early in their match with Westover on Saturday at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium that there would be further drama.

Colquitt scored three goals in the first 19 minutes and went on to an 8-1 victory to finish a satisfying week with three victories.

The victory completed a sweep as the Lady Packers bounced back from a 9-0 loss at Warner Robins on Friday to defeat the Lady Patriots 2-0 on a pair of second half goals.

The Westover boys were clearly overmatched and Packers coach Rob Craft took advantage to rest some players who were obviously leg weary after three matches in five days, including two crucial Region 1-AAAAA games on the road.

“We got to give some minutes to guys who needed them and gave some rest to guys who needed that,” Craft said after watching his team raise its record to 4-3 overall.

Daniel Garcia got the scoring started with his first goal of the afternoon less than three minutes in.

Omar Zapote made it 2-0 with a goal six minutes later. Garcia got the assist and then scored his second goal of the match with 21:13 remaining to extend the lead to 3-0.

Julio Perez got the assist on Garcia’s second score.

With 15:46 remaining in the first half, Tyler Dismuke cleaned up a loose ball in front of the Westover net for his first goal of the season and a 4-0 Packers lead.

Seven minutes later, Dismuke scored again, with Garcia getting the assist.

Rich Tyndall scored the next two Colquitt County goals, to give the Packers a 7-0 lead. The second came on a header with 2:40 remaining in the half. Dismuke got the assist.

Tyndall now has four goals on the season.

And with 1:29 left in the half, Perez scored to make it 8-0. David Moreno got the assist.

Westover scored its only goal just 19 seconds into the second half.

Craft said he would give his team Monday off. Then preparations will begin in earnest for next Friday’s Region 1-AAAAA matchup with Lowndes at the stadium.

The Vikings are 1-0 in the region after blanking Valdosta 5-0 on Friday. The Lowndes boys will meet 0-3 Coffee on Tuesday, while the Packers are off.

The Colquitt County girls, coming off a disappointing shutout loss at Warner Robins the night before, were unable to punch one into the net in the first half against the Lady Patriots on Saturday.

But less than three minutes into the second half, Abbey Taylor took a short cross from Lacey Webb and got it past the Westover keeper for the only goal Colquitt County would need.

Following Taylor’s goal, Lady Packers coach Jimbo Jarvis considered dropping back and playing defense the rest of the way.

“Then I thought, we’ll just keep doing what we’ve been doing,” Jarvis said.

Just five minutes after Taylor’s goal, a shot bounced off the Westover keeper’s hand and rolled in front of her.

Before she get possession of it, Carly Banks knocked it into the net to put the Lady Packers up 2-0.

“Carly’s going to pick up trash like that,” Jarvis said.

Taylor then moved back to play defense and the Lady Packers went on to the 2-0 victory.

Colquitt’s girls again were forced to compete with just 11 players. Leading scorer Alba Hernandez and Laura Hill Bannister were both sick and unable to play.

“That’s two games in a row the girls had to play 80 minutes of soccer,” Jarvis said. “I think Laura Hill gave us about 10 minutes last night.

“We had no subs today.”

The Lady Packers are now 4-3 overall and will have a 1-1 region record when they play host to Lowndes on Friday.

The Vikettes were stunned by Valdosta 1-0 on Friday. It was the first time the Valdosta girls had ever defeated Lowndes. The Lady Wildcats got a goal from Jordan Theis in the 77th minute for the victory.

Jarvis said he hoped to have his team back at full-strength for the Vikettes.

“I’m just proud we’re back on track,” Jarvis said.

Colquitt County’s junior varsity matches scheduled for Saturday in Douglas were postponed. A makeup date has not been set.
