MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County middle school soccer teams took 3-0 records to Tifton on Saturday, but knew those records would be in jeopardy.
Neither lost in their toughest matches of the season, although the boys had to settle for a 1-1 tie.
The Colquitt County girls record appeared in danger when they trailed 2-1 at the half.
But Lauren Kelshaw’s second goal of the morning tied the match and a goal by Brittany Parker, her first of the season, gave the Lady Packers the lead.
Kelshaw added another goal later in the half on a penalty kick to give the Lady Packers a 4-3 victory.
One Tift County goal was on a penalty kick. The other two were on free kicks.
Madison Turner got the assist on Kelshaw’s first goal. Kelshaw got the assist on Parker’s score.
“My defense and midfield did an excellent job,” said middle school girls coach P.J. Horne. “We communicated and worked well together.”
Kelshaw now has scored 12 goals in Colquitt County’s four matches, including four in one match and three in two others.
The Colquitt County middle school boys will take a 3-0-1 record into Thursday’s match with Cairo at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium. Roberto Ruiz gave the Packers a 1-0 lead on a long shot over the Tift County keeper’s head.
But the Blue Devils got the equalizer with about five minutes remaining in the match on a penalty kick following a hand ball.
“This was the first time we had to play up to that speed,” Colquitt County coach Ben Marion said.
Marion praised the play of keeper Alex Littleton.
“He did a marvelous job,” Marion said. “He saved many, many shots. He really stepped up.”
On Thursday, the girls game against Cairo at the stadium will begin at 4:30 p.m. The boys will play at 6 p.m.
