In pursuit of college

Dear editor:
The ongoing struggle to shoehorn a college into downtown Moultrie is a situation that screams for a visionary solution.
Current thinking means that every expansion of the college involves difficulties in finding and preparing classroom space and in providing for student parking.
Building an urban college has been successful in the case of Georgia State University in Atlanta. But Colquitt is not an urban county. We still have open space.
Consider this: Propose to the Board of Regents that the folks here buy a tract of land of suitable size and location to meet college needs for many years to come. The regents could put up buildings with no hassle whatsoever.
The college would be a source of great pride for the community. More students would be drawn from a wider area.
It could be a center for off-campus courses offered by other colleges. Local students could get a good start on their college education at a savings in costs.
Private developers could build apartments for students who come in from a distance.
Many business leaders would find the college a great memorial for their charity gifts. Folks of more modest means likely would join in helping to buy the land.
