MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County soccer teams were pleased to end two-game losing streaks and win their Region 1-AAAAA openers on Wednesday, but they haven’t had long to enjoy the victories.
The Lady Packers and Packers make the long bus ride north Warner Robins today for another pair of region matches.
And then, after the long drive back tonight, the Colquitt teams will meet Westover in a pair of non-region games at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Colquitt went to Douglas on Wednesday after the matches with Coffee were rained out on Tuesday.
The Colquitt County girls turned a 1-0 halftime lead into a 4-2 victory over the Lady Trojans.
“We were excited about getting the first region win, but it was not easy,” said Lady Packers coach Jimbo Jarvis. “We felt confident, but Coffee County didn’t let up the whole time.
“They are the most improved Coffee County team I’ve seen.”
Especially giving the Lady Packers trouble was the Coffee keeper, whose punts often crossed midfield, forcing Colquitt to battle back downfield.
The Lady Packers played again without the injured Karlie Brown on defense, but got an outstanding effort from Avery Castellow, Jarvis said.
And Lacey Webb performed well in the outside midfield.
“She is catching on to what we want her to do,” Jarvis said.
The Lady Packers led 1-0 at the half on the strength of an Alba Hernandez goal that came after a drop pass by Webb off a free kick.
Suzi Hernandez extended the lead to 2-0 early in the second half with her fifth goal of the season. Alba Hernandez assisted.
Coffee scored to make it 2-1 minutes later, but 16 minutes in, Alba Hernandez scored on a breakaway to put Colquitt up 3-1.
“She did a good job of beating the keeper,” Jarvis said of Alba Hernandez, who now has seven goals on the season.
Coffee answered to make it 3-2.
“It was close the whole time,” Jarvis said.
With the Packers trying to run some time off the clock late in the game, Abbey Taylor sent a shot just over the keeper’s head that dropped just outside the net.
Suzi Hernandez got a piece of the ball before Carly Banks punched it in the next for the final goal.
Taylor and Suzi Hernandez each were credited with assists on the fourth goal of the season for Banks.
She has scored a goal in four of the Lady Packers five matches.
Colquitt’s girls will take a 3-2 overall record and 1-0 mark to Warner Robins tonight.
The Demonettes are 2-1 and also are 1-0 in the region after a 11-0 victory over Valdosta.
The Warner Robins girls also have blanked Perry 8-0.
Their only loss was to East Coweta came by a 4-3 score on penalty kicks.
Colquitt’s girls lost 3-2 an 2-1 to Warner Robins last year.
“We seem to play them well,” Jarvis said. “But our whole season is going to be a dogfight. We’re so young and inexperienced.
“We’re building slowly. The girls are stepping up and playing well. I’m proud of where we are now.”
Like the Lady Packers, Colquitt’s boys were coming off losses to Thomas County Central and Lee County.
After losing both of those matches by 2-1 scores, the Packers went into overtime in Douglas tied 1-1.
But Colquitt avoided a third straight 2-1 loss when D.J. Vanzant scored with 30 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Packers the region road victory.
Hudson Wrenn got the assist.
The Packers first goal was scored by Daniel Garcia with the assist going to Spencer Clayton.
Colquitt County boys coach Rob Craft said his team increased its intensity for the game and it paid off.
Colquitt will take a 2-3 overall record to Warner Robins today to meet the Demons, who are 1-2 overall and 1-0 in the region.
After blanking Valdosta 6-0, Warner Robins has lost a pair of close matches to Perry, by a 2-1 score, and to East Coweta, by a 3-2 margin.
