MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County High junior varsity baseball team went on the road on Thursday and had little trouble knocking off Thomasville High.

In their season-opener, the JV Packers pounded out 14 hits and got outstanding pitching from Zack Goodno and Ryan Sherling to defeat the Bulldogs 20-1.

Chris Phillips and Alex Tillman led an offensive assault in which all nine Packers had base hits.

Phillips went 4-for-5 and Tillman went 3-for-3 with a double.

Goodno and Davis Durham each had doubles.

Andrew Clark, Ryan Ward, Payne Newsome and McClellan Mobley had singles.

Goodno went the first 3 2/3 innings on the mound, giving up just one hit while striking out five. He did not issue a walk.

Sherling finished up, going 1 1/3 inning, striking out two and walking two.

The only Thomasville run scored on a Colquitt County error.

“Zach and Ryan both pitched well,” said Packers coach Greg Tillery.

The junior varsity Packers were scheduled to meet Thomas County Central on Wednesday, but that game was rained out.

Colquitt will have a busy six days next week.

The JV Packers will meet Thomasville at 5 p.m. Monday at Ike Aultman Field at Packer Park.

On Wednesday, Valdosta will be in town for a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader.

The pitching staff will be further taxed when Lee County visits for a noon doubleheader on Saturday, March 8.

The Colquitt County ninth-grade team will host Americus-Sumter County on Saturday in a noon doubleheader.
