MOULTRIE — Roadways in Moultrie and Colquitt County proved to be deadly in 2007, as a total of 13 people were killed in accidents, including four pedestrians.

The number is higher than the eight people killed in 2006 and matches the 13 people killed in accidents in 2005 and almost the 14 people killed in 2004.

Sgt. 1st Class Rick Warren, post commander of the Georgia State Patrol office in Thomasville, said troopers were called to 156 accidents in Colquitt County in 2006. Those accidents resulted in 165 injuries and six fatalities, including two people killed in separate accidents on the same day.

Among the fatal accidents were:

• James Bradley “Brad” Stroble, 38, of Moultrie, died of injuries he received from an accident at the intersection of Millpond Road and Old Doerun Road Feb. 11.

• David Brooks, 33, of Jim Clark Road in Omega, died of injuries from an accident on Ellenton-Omega Road south of the George Etheridge Road intersection Feb. 26. Susan Diann Stevens, 36, of 526 Jim Clark Road in Omega, was charged with homicide by a vehicle, possession of cocaine, a seatbelt violation, no proof of insurance, DUI and failure to maintain lane in the accident.

• Khristina Marie Hardy, 46, of 909 D.H. Alderman Road, was killed in a two-vehicle accident on Broad Street in Doerun near the Green Street intersection July 9. She got out of her Chevrolet truck and was pinned to the back of it after it was hit by a Ford F-350.

• Michael Bernard Enoch, 40, of 1324 First Ave. N.W., was killed when his Buick Lesabre drifted into the northbound side of Highway 319 North outside of Norman Park, also on July 9. The Lesabre hit a International truck head-on.

• Cecil Bowers, 62, of 265 Old Timey Trail, died after he was hit by a Jeep Cherokee in his driveway Aug. 18. Carson Joseph Spivey, 18, of Moultrie, was charged with first degree vehicular homicide, driving under the influence, underage consumption of alcohol and failure to maintain lane in the accident.

• Anne Lindsey Ruppert, 21, of Tallahassee, Fla., was killed when she apparently ran a stop sign at the intersection of Highway 37 West and Highway 202 and was hit by a Ford Windstar van.

Moultrie Police Sgt. Sam Smith said roadways in Moultrie were just as deadly in 2007, as seven people were killed in six accidents. The department had a total of 954 accidents, 650 of them taking place on roadways. That number is down from the 1096 accidents, 755 on roadways, in 2006.

Among those killed in accident in Moultrie were:

• Barbara Meders Smith, 63, of Tifton, died at a Jacksonville, Fla., hospital May 17 from injuries she sustained in an April 24 accident at the intersection of Highway 319 and Veterans Parkway.

• Toye Fillyaw Cooper, 82, of 300 Port St., died of injuries she sustained in a three-vehicle accident at the Tallokas Road and Veterans Parkway intersection Aug. 12.

• William Lee Smith, 59, of Moultrie, was killed when he was hit by a vehicle as he tried to cross West Central Avenue near Sixth Street Northwest Sept. 6.

• Silvero Geronimo, of Moultrie, was killed when he was hit by a vehicle as he tried to cross First Avenue Southeast near Old Adel Road Sept. 22. After the initial impact, two other vehicles ran over the man as he lay in the road.

• Marcelo Lopez Gomez, 27, of Moultrie, was killed as he was attempting to make a left turn from Regency Village Drive onto Highway 133 North Oct. 17.

• Leobardo Rendon Jr., 31, of 1315 Overlook Drive, and Jaime Najera, 30, of 922 Summerlin Road, were killed when their Jeep Cherokee went into some trees off of the West Bypass Nov. 18.

In all of the accidents in Moultrie, Smith said no charges were filed against the other drivers because the deceased was the at-fault party. The Nov. 18 accident, and both pedestrian fatalities, involved the deceased being intoxicated. The remaining three accidents involved the deceased either failing to yield or following too closely to other vehicles.
