MOULTRIE — Alba Hernandez scored four goals and Suzi Hernandez added three as the Colquitt County girls soccer team opened the season with an 11-2 victory over Thomasville on Tuesday at Tom White Field at Mack Tharpe Stadium.
The Colquitt County boys fell in the second game 1-0.
The Bulldogs scored with 23 minutes left for the win.
“We had a couple of chances at the end to tie it,” coach Rob Craft said. “It was not a bad first game. We saw some things to work on.”
The Lady Packers were blanked 9-0 by Thomas County Central in their preseason scrimmage 10 days ago, but were much more proficient on both ends of the field on Tuesday.
“It was a totally different team,” said Lady Packers coach Jimbo Jarvis. “We found our marks. We played well in space.
“And we were better conditioned than we were against TCC.”
Jarvis was especially pleased with the play of junior midfielder Abbey Taylor, who scored a pair of goals.
“Abbey played the best game of her life,” Jarvis said.
Freshman Karlie Brown was impressive in the sweeper role, Jarvis said.
“The main thing is that everyone was having fun,” Jarvis said. “I don’t like to beat anyone down.
“But we need the momentum.”
Thomasville scored first, but the Lady Packers reeled off the next eight goals.
Suzi Hernandez tied the game at 1-1 and Taylor scored on a penalty kick with 25:42 left in the first half to put Colquitt up to stay.
After Taylor’s goal, Alba Hernandez scored three straight goals and Taylor added her second with 3:59 left to put Colquitt up 6-1 at halftime.
Suzi and Alba scored the first two goals of the second half before the Lady Bulldogs punched a header in for their last goal of the night.
Colquitt finished with goals from Carly Banks, Suzi Hernandez and Margarita Moreno.
