Moore wins shootout at Invitational

The University of Georgia’s Hannah Moore was fourth on 3-meter, ninth on 1-meter and 15th on platform at last week’s Georgia Diving Invitational held at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens.

The Georgia Invitational drew diving teams from Florida, Tennessee, LSU, Auburn, Kentucky, Arkansas, Purdue, Penn State, Pitt, Virginia, North Carolina, East Carolina, Drexel, Clemson and SMU.

Moore also won the the just-for-fun shootout On Friday evening, featuring the top six divers from the finals.

Under a format in which one diver was eliminated after each round, Georgia’s Chris Colwill and Moore emerged victoriously.

Colwill swept the 1- and 3-meter shootouts, while Moore became the first Lady Bulldog in the 12-year history of the event to win a shootout.

n Ashley Stafford led Columbus State with 16 points in the Lady Cougars recent 70-69 Peach Belt Conference loss to Lander.

Lander’s Tiara Good hit two free throws with 3.9 second remaining to give her team the one-point lead.

Stafford was 5-for-13 from the floor and was 6-for-9 from the free throw line against Lander. She also tied for high on the team with eight rebounds.

On Sunday, in an 88-74 loss to Frrancis Marion in Florence, S.C., Stafford scored 15 points by 5-for-8 shooting from the floor and 5-for-9 from the free throw line. She added nine rebounds. The losses drop Columbus State to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in the Peach Belt Conference.

n Colquitt County Hall of Fame coach Vanessa Taylor has her Johnson C. Smith University women’s basketball team off to an 8-3 start.

The Lady Golden Bulls, who played at Wingate Monday night, are 4-0 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after Saturday’s 51-45 victory over Virginia Union.

n Former Colquitt County and ABAC standout John Michael Hall is doing his part as the Drake University men’s basketball team has jumped out to the best start in school history.

The Bulldogs held off Evansville 71-68 on Sunday for their 11th straight victory.

Drake improved its record to 12-1 overall for the program’s best start ever. It also marked the first time since the 1982-83 season that the Bulldogs have opened the Missouri Valley Conference with a 3-0 record.

The winning streak is the longest at the school since the 1969-70 team also won 11 straight games.

Hall, a junior forward, had five points and three rebounds in the win over Evansville.

The Bulldogs will be home on Wednesday to take on Indiana State.

n Jeremy DeBruce is either the first or second player off the bench for the Albany State University men’s basketball team.

The former Packer football and basketball player also is working hard toward earning a degree in engineering.
