MOULTRIE — A Colquitt County E-911 dispatcher was fired after being charged in connection with a string of burglaries in four counties. Authorities are also searching for several suspects in the burglaries following a vehicle chase in Mitchell and Dougherty counties Saturday night.
Amanda Nicole Brooks, 20, of 1522 Funston-Sale City Road, was charged Saturday with the false report of a crime and filing a false police report.
Colquitt County Sheriff’s Investigator Shawn Bostick said at least six businesses in Mitchell, Worth, Tift and Colquitt counties have been burglarized since Aug. 15. Video surveillance cameras from thefts in Sale City and Tifton captured images of a silver Toyota Corolla that was involved in the thefts.
The same Corolla was pictured Friday during a burglary at Doerun Hardware, and Bostick said it was also spotted at a convenience store burglary in Mitchell County on Friday. When that store’s alarm went off, however, a Mitchell County sheriff’s deputy was near enough to give chase.
The Corolla lost control and wrecked in Dougherty County during the chase and everyone inside fled, Bostick said. The car’s registration came back to Brooks, who was working at the Colquitt County E-911 Center at the time of the burglaries.
Bostick said Brooks filed a report Saturday that the Corolla was stolen, but he claimed evidence showed she knew the vehicle had been involved in the burglaries. She was placed under arrest and charged after making the report. She is also facing a charge of attempted burglary in Worth County for her alleged role in a burglary there, and she has been fired from her position as a dispatcher.
Bostick said investigators do not believe Brooks used her position as an E-911 dispatcher to assist in the burglaries. He said they do believe she was aware her car was being used in the thefts.
The Corolla’s occupants fled following the crash, and Bostick said Jason Lee Baird, 22, also of 1522 Funston-Sale City Road, allegedly stole a tan Chevrolet dually truck from a house near the accident scene. Baird, Brooks’ boyfriend, was still at large as of Tuesday afternoon and was believed to still have the truck.
Anyone with information on Baird’s whereabouts or anyone else involved in the burglaries is asked to contact the Colquitt, Tift, Mitchell or Worth county sheriff’s offices.
