MOULTRIE — Finally.

After missing out on state championships they thought they should have won as 10-and-unders and 12-and-unders, the Colquitt County 14-and-unders got the job done on Saturday in Waycross.

Completing a sweep of the sub-District III tournament, the best-of-3 District III championship series and the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association tournament, Colquitt County’s all-stars won the 2007 state championship.

And they did it in style.

Cole Pitts pitched a six-inning no-hitter and struck out 10 as Colquitt County blanked Douglas-Coffee County 8-0.

Colquitt County coach Robby Pitts said Douglas-Coffee County was the best team his all-stars has faced this year.

What he left unsaid that there was no team to match his in the state this summer.

And Robby Pitts took no credit for the team’s success.

“It’s not that hard to do,” he said of coaching the team. “Those boys can just play.

“Before the game today, they said, ‘Don’t worry about the mules. Just load up the wagon.’”

The victory was the 10th in a row for the all-stars, who won four straight in the sub-District tournament in Moultrie, won two straight in the best-of-3 playoff against Thomasville in Thomasville, then just dominated the state tournament.

Of the four state tournament wins, three were mercy-rule no-hitters. Only Glynn County, a 10-2 victim in the second game of the state tournament, managed a base hit.

Colquitt County opened state play with a 13-0 victory over tournament host Ware County in which Hayden Kudela and Zac Goodno combined on a no-hitter.

After defeating Glynn County, Pitts and Kudela combined on a three-inning no-hitter in a 16-1 victory over Laurens County that send Colquitt County into the championship game.

In the state tournament, Colquitt County outscored its four opponents 47-3. In the 10-game postseason, the run disparity was 112-7, including six shutouts.

Robby Pitts saved his nephew Cole for the Saturday clincher and the 6-foot-4 right-hander delivered. Only two batters reached. Pitts hit a batter in the second and issued a walk in the fifth.

Cole Pitts, who also had eight hits in the tournament, got plenty of help on Saturday.

Daylon Connell had two hits, also giving him a team-high eight in the four-game state tournament. Hayden Kudela, Mark Lindsey, Ryan Davis, Vann Pitts and Blake Stamps also had hits.

Colquitt County was scoreless in the first two innings, but in the third, Ryan Davis singled and Hayden Kudela was hit by a pitch and both rode home on a double by Stamps.

Later in the inning, Connell singled in Cole Pitts, who had reached on an error.

In the fifth inning, Colquitt stretched its lead to 5-0 when Kudela tripled and scored on a passed ball.

In the sixth inning, Mark Lindsey singled and Matt Creech and Stephen Moore each drew walks.

Vann Pitts followed with a base hit scoring both Lindsey and Creech.

After Zac Goodno was walked intentionally, Kudela singled in Moore with the eighth run to give Colquitt County yet another mercy rule victory.

Robby Pitts said what he especially like about his team was that “everybody contributed.”

The team includes Zac Goodno, Payne Newsome, Mark Lindsey, Vann Pitts, Ryan Davis, Matt Creech, Daylon Connell, Stephen Moore, Cole Pitts, Hayden Kudela, Tyler Brown, Matt Lindsey and Blake Stamps.

The Colquitt County all-stars assistant coaches are Chance Pitts and Shannon Dickerson.
