MOULTRIE — Twice on Friday the Colquitt County 9-10 all-stars went into the bottom of the sixth inning involved in tie games.

But on both occasions, they could not keep the opposition off the board, leading to their elimination from the Georgia Parks and Recreation Department’s state tournament at the Magnolia Sports Complex.

Colquitt County won its state tournament opener 2-0 over Wayne County on Thursday, setting up its meeting with Dublin at 10:50 a.m. on Friday.

Colquitt scored a run on a two-out single by Adam Merritt in the top of the sixth to tie game against Dublin at 7-7.

But Dublin took advantage of a pair of Colquitt County miscues to score the winning run in the bottom of the sixth, dropping Colquitt County to the losers bracket.

Colquitt County and Swainsboro were deadlocked at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Swainsboro’s Daniel Overstreet laced a two-out single to right.

Jarrod Downer, the next batter, was 2-for-2 with a long home run in his previous at bat.

Colquitt County elected not to pitch to Downer, intentionally walking him and moving Overstreet to second base.

Barrett Bonds grounded the next pitch to center field for a hit and Overstreet beat the throw to the plate to score the winning run.

Swainsboro advanced to another losers bracket game, where it was eliminated by Wayne County 13-7.

After defeating Colquitt County, Dublin fell to Crisp County and will play Wayne County in the final losers bracket game at 9:30 this morning.

Crisp County has won three straight and can win the championship this morning against the Wayne County-Dublin winner.

Crisp County opened the tournament with a 6-2 victory over Swainsboro on Thursday, then knocked off Thomasville 2-0 on Friday to set up its meeting with Dublin.

In its first game on Friday, Colquitt County led 1-0 in the first inning on Kyle Ashley’s sacrifice fly that scored Ryan Pipkin, who had singled.

Colquitt stretched its lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth. Ashley drove in two more runs with a single. Another run scored on a throwing error.

But Dublin turned the game around in the bottom of the third, scoring six times. The first five batters in the inning reached on base hits.

Colquitt tied the game in the top of the fourth on RBI singles by Pipkin and Ryan Chatman.

Dublin regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out single by Austin Scott.

But again Colquitt County bounced back in the top of the sixth.

With two out, Pipkin singled and went to second when the Dublin outfielder bobbled the ball.

Adam Merritt took advantage, driving a single to left to score Pipkin with the tying run.

But Dublin got the winning run in the bottom of the inning.

In the losers bracket game, Colquitt took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on an infield single by Chatman and a double by Ashley.

The lead held until the third when Swainsboro got a single from Collin Watson and a double from Brock Hooks to tie the game.

Downer’s homer to right center to lead off the fourth gave Swainsboro the 2-1 lead.

Parker Hoes stroked a two-out single to score Nick Nichols in the top of the fifth to tie the game, but again Colquitt County came up short.

Nichols led Colquitt County in the tournament with seven hits. Chatman had six.

Pipkin, who went 4-for-4 in the loss to Dublin, had five hits.
