MOULTRIE — Colquitt County’s John Michael Harrison was among the baseball players selected to play in the Georgia Dugout Club’s Fifth Annual Georgia Underclassmen Top 100 Showcase.
Some 583 players tried out in 11 sites, but only 100 were selected to play in the showcase, which was held on July 2-3 at Kennesaw State.
The 100 players were divided into six teams, each of which played two simulated games.
Harrison, a rising junior who started in the outfield and pitched and batted leadoff for the Colquitt County High baseball team last season, was selected at a tryout at South Georgia College in Douglas on June 12.
He did not pitch, but played center field and right field in the showcase games. And while he did not get a hit, he did reach base and performed well in the outfield and on the base paths.
Harrison was one of eight players from Region 1-AAAAA. Five players from Lowndes and two from Coffee also were selected.
The showcase drew scouts from 32 college and university teams.
In addition, scouts from 22 major league baseball teams were on hand.
Harrison batted .317 with 17 runs batted in as a sophomore for the Packers last spring.
Colquitt finished with a 13-16 record, but won four of it last five region games to qualify for the playoffs
Harrison also performed well on Colquitt County’s summer league team that went 17-4.
Packers coach Eric McCranie was pleased with the summer team’s performance.
“I was very encouraged,” McCranie said. “We graduated most of our offense, but we hit the ball better than I expected.
“And we ran the bases well and bunted well.”
