14-and-under boys win District title

MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County 14-and-under A all-stars broke a 3-3 tie to defeat Thomasville 7-3 in the second game of a doubleheader on Tuesday to sweep the District III championship series and earn a berth in the Georgia Recreation and Parks Association’s state tournament.
Colquitt County won the first game 11-1.
Colquitt County will advance to the state tournament, which will begin July 11 in Waycross.
Colquitt County was never challenged in the north sub-District tournament held at the Magnolia Sports Complex in Moultrie, defeating Americus-Sumter County 11-1, Crisp County 9-0, Colquitt County B 12-0 and Lee County 15-0.
Thomasville advanced to the best-of-3 series by winning the south sub-District tournament, also held in Thomasville.
Colquitt County breezed in the opening game of Tuesday’s doubleheader. Cole Pitts and Tyler Brown did the pitching.
Pitts and Mark Lindsey each had three-run homers in the first game. Matt Creech, Payne Newsome and Stephen Moore added doubles.
Thomasville jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second game, before Colquitt County rallied to tie the game 3-3 and then go ahead 7-3.
Daylon Connell started the second game, with Brown and Pitts following on the mound.
Pitts pitched the last two innings, giving up one hit and striking out six.
Pitts had two more hits in the second game. Brown, Lindsey, Creech, Moore, Vann Pitts, Blake Stamps and Zac Goodno each had one hit.
Goodno’s hit was a double that drove in the run to put Colquitt County ahead to stay.
