AUGUSTA — A former Moultrie gynecologist was convicted Wednesday of sexually assaulting a 9-year-old girl.
A Columbia County jury convicted Jerry Jackson Lee II, 47, of Evans, of aggravated sexual battery but acquitted him of child molestation, according to a story published in Thursday’s Augusta Chronicle’s online edition.
“I think it is a fair and accurate verdict,” Assistant District Attorney Jeff Johnston told the Chronicle.
Lee was arrested two years ago after he was accused of sexually abusing the 9-year-old in his home.
A sentencing hearing has not been set, but an aggravated sexual battery conviction carries as much as 20 years incarceration, with a mandatory minimum of 10 years in prison, Johnston said.
“He’ll be gone for 10 years,” the victim’s mother said after the verdict. “God is good because he is going to prison.”
Lee has been held without bond in the Columbia County Detention Center since his 2005 arrest on a probation violation from Hazelhurst, Ga., The Chronicle reported. That charge involved a 2004 fraud allegation in which he was accused of acquiring a controlled substance using a revoked registration number.
Lee voluntarily surrendered his license to practice medicine in August 2003 because of allegations of drug use and a medical condition, according to The Chronicle, citing the Georgia Composite State Board of Medical Examiners Web site.
Lee practiced at Moultrie OB/GYN from 1997 to 2001.
