CCHS appealing to NCAA to get Cuff eligible

MOULTRIE — Colquitt County’s Vance Cuff has never failed a class, has a qualifying test score and has a 3.0 grade point average.

But he is in danger of not being to attend the University of Georgia this summer after signing a letter of intent to play football for the Bulldogs.

The NCAA Clearinghouse has denied two of the classes that Colquitt County officials expected would be part of the 14 core courses needed for Cuff’s eligibility.

The All-Region defensive back is taking a summer class that will end today. Packers coach Tim Cokely said Cuff will pass that core course, making up one of the two that that has been denied.

But if the NCAA turns down a a second appeal by Colquitt County High that the Oral/Written Communications/Speech course be accepted as one of his core courses, Cuff will come up one course short.

And Cokely said there there is “no Plan B” for how to get Cuff eligible to enter Georgia this year.

The other course that Cuff passed that was not approved as a core course is Principals of Technology.

Cokely sounded as if he could live with that course not being accepted.

But he said he believes the other should be considered a core course.

Cokely said Colquitt County High has already appealed to the NCAA one time and was turned down.

But he contends that several other schools in Region 1-AAAAA offer the same Oral/Written Communication/Speech class and it is accepted by the NCAA Clearinghouse at those schools as a core course.

“That puts our athletes at a disadvantage when it comes to earning scholarships,” Cokely said. “It makes no sense.”

Cokely said Colquitt County has been trying to get the course approved for more than a year.

“I feel very strongly that (the course) should be approved,” Cokely said. “As a coach, you know what’s right for your kids and I’ve been losing sleep over this one.

“The NCAA needs to do the right thing. It’s the right thing for Vance. He’s done all we’ve asked him to do. He should be in summer school in Athens now.”

A defensive back, Cuff committed to Georgia before the 2006 season and signed in February.
