MOULTRIE — A Moultrie convenience store owner faced punishment from Moultrie City Council Tuesday for the sale of alcohol to a minor at his business, then he returned minutes later seeking a license to sell alcohol at another establishment.
Two other businessmen also faced show-cause hearings Tuesday related to illegal alcohol sales.
Gusharan Sekhon, owner of Args Quick Serve at 1350 East Bypass, chose to pay a $1,000 fine as a first-time offender. He said he was sad the incident took place and spoke with all of his employees warning them not to sell to a minor again or face termination. Mayor William McIntosh offered him the choice of the fine or a 30-day suspension of his alcohol license.
Later in the meeting, the city council approved Sekhon’s application to sell beer and wine for off-premises consumption at the South Main Citgo at 1900 S. Main St. McIntosh stated he hopes Sekhon understands the alcohol sales law and the city’s enforcement of it. Sekhon stated he understood and will not let the city down for giving him the license.
Darshakku Patel followed Sekhon to face penalties for a alcohol sale to a minor at Citgo Food Mart at 619 W. Central Ave. Patel said the employee who made the sale did not have a beer card at the time, and he did not deny the sale took place.
Like Sekhon, Patel chose to pay the $1,000 fine as a first-time offender.
Aif Ang Chen faced a show cause hearing for a sale of alcohol on a Sunday at New China Buffet at 517 First Ave. S.E. She said she did not know alcohol sales were illegal on Sundays when the sale was made. She chose to have her alcohol license suspended for 30 days instead of paying a fine.
Other issues brought before the council included:
