USTA tennis teams perform well

MOULTRIE — The newly formed Colquitt County USTA junior tennis program has begun competition and h opened league play recently and has met with some early success.

The 10-and-under team met Pine Forest from Albany in a recent doubleheader and took a pair of 3-2 victories.

In the first match, won by Colquitt County 3-2, Buck Blalock lost his singles match to Chandler Matthews 5-8. Courtney Terrell won her match over Gabby Pinnero 8-1.

In boys doubles, Cody Jenkins and John Buck Eunice fell to Tyler Lowe and J. Coleman Hobson 5-8.

But Colquitt County won in both girls doubles and mixed doubles.

In girls doubles, Anna Barber and Heather Grace Dunn won over Sara Jones and Anna Margeson 8-2, and in mixed doubles Ferrell Tyndall and Jud Jones defeated Saville Sullivan and Lane Hatcher 8-3.

In the second match, Cody Jenkins gave Colquitt County a boys singles win, defeating J. Coleman Hobson 8-2

Pine Forest won at female singles, where Joyner Tyson defeated Anna Barber 8-7.

Pine Forest also won at boys doubles with Chandler Matthews and Lane Hatcher defeating Jud Jones and John Buck Eunice 8-5.

Colquitt County won at female doubles, where Ferrell Tyndall and Heather Grace Dunn defeated Saville Sullivan and Anna Margeson 8-2, and at mixed doubles, where Courtney Terrell and Buck Blalock defeated Gabby Pinnero and Tyler Lowe 8-2.

On May 17, the Colquitt County Stapleton team met the Colquitt County Forehand team in 12-and-under play.

In boys singles, Stapleton’s Jay Tolbert defeated David Forehand 8-4; in girls singles, Stapleton’s Conley Ward defeated Gloria Beard 8-0; and in mixed doubles, Stapleton’s Jay Tolbert and Hannah Radney won over David Forehand and Gloria Beard 8-6.

Last Thursday, Colquitt County’s 12-and-under Stapleton team won 3-2 over Camilla.

In boys singles, Colquitt’s Jay Tolbert defeated Cody Carden 8-4; in girls singles, Colquitt’s Conley Ward defeated Sierra Davis 8-6; in boys doubles, Colquitt County’s Jay Tolbert and Nicholas Mobley defeated Brock Allen and Clint Godwin 8-2.

Colquitt County’s Hannah Radney and Meg Robinson fell to Laken Lewis and Jaycee Santos, 3-8 in girls doubles and Nicholas Mobley and Lindsey Stapleton fell to Camilla’s Nicholas Shaw and Abbey Anglin 1-8.

Also last Thursday, Colquitt’s 14-and-under Tolbert team met Colquitt’s Blalock team.

In boys singles, Kyle Tolbert defeated Bo Blalock 8-1; in girls singles, Blalock’s Ivey Jane Reeves defeated Brooke Kick 8-1; in boys doubles, Blalock’s Lynn Jones and John Barber defeated Paul Leonard and David Tyndall 8-2; in girls doubles, Tolbert’s Jordan Hammack and Brooke Kick defeated Landon Rehberg and Ivey Jane Reeves 8-0; and in mixed doubles, Blalock’s Landon Rehberg and Ivey Jane Reeves won 8-4 over Ricky Patel and Chelsea Wilkerson.

Colquitt County 18-and-under Edwards team swept Camilla on Thursday.

In boys singles, Blake Jenkins won over Will Murphy 8-1. In female singles, Laura Murphy defeated Ashley Williams 8-4. In boys doubles, Christian Edwards and Jacob Tompkins won over Matthew Hays and Will Murphy 8-2. In female doubles, Alexa Isaacs and Kate Reeves won 8-1; and in mixed doubles, Christian Edwards and Constance Terrell won over Matthew Hayes and Jordan Cranford 8-5.

The Colquitt County Oaks team also swept its Camilla counterpart.

Colquitt’s Brandon Oaks won over Braden Anglin 8-5 in boys singles. Carli Hester won over Betsy Bostick 8-1. Oaks and Dillon Underwood won in men’s doubles over Tyler Sanders and Jamie Butler 8-1.

In female doubles, Hester and Kayla Kelley defeated Banks Westbrook and Betsy Bostick 8-2. And Underwood and Kelley won over Trey Harrison and Banks Westbrook 8-1.

Colquitt County’s No. 3 18-and-under team won all five points from Tift County on Thursday.

In men’s singles, Zach Owen won over Clint Kendrick 8-0. In female singles, Meghan Traylor defeated Laura Brewer 8-3.

In male doubles, Lee Veasey and Kamryn McMullen won over Drew Diffle and Zachary McPherson 8-3.

Jana Harvin and Laura Robinson won by forfeit in female doubles.

In mixed doubles, Zach Owen and Montell Wilkerson won over Clint Kendrick and Laura Brewer 8-4.
