MOULTRIE — The 2007 five-sophomore, two-junior Colquitt County girls tennis team had a fine run that included a pair of state playoff victories. But that run ended in Kingsland on Monday to a strong and experienced Camden County team by a 4-1 score.

The Lady Packers fall one victory short of the Final Four, but coach Linda Berl had plenty of praise for her team, which had just two experienced players when the season began.

“We didn’t choke at all,” Berl said. “We did not give anything away. It was such a close match.

“But Camden earned it. They’ve been through this.”

The Lady Packers, who were second in Region 1-AAAAA, finish with a 15-6 record that includes state tournament victories over Morrow, at home, and Union Grove on the road.

Camden, the Region 3-AAAAA champions, eliminated Lithonia 5-0 and Newnan 3-2 before ending the Lady Packers season.

The Lady Wildcats will advance to a Final Four match against the Etowah-Walton survivor.

Camden got its first point when freshman Katie Sailors won over Laura Murphy at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-1.

“She is a very strong freshman,” Berl said of Sailors.

The Lady Wildcats also won at No. 1 singles, where Elyse Reyes defeated Cara McCalley 6-0, 6-1.

The Lady Packers No. 1 doubles team of Jessica Harvin and Savanna Lamon got Colquitt County’s lone point with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Cassie Walls and Leah Lentz.

The two will take a 16-1 record into next season, if they continue to play doubles together.

At No. 2 doubles, sophomores Alexa Isaacs and Kate Reeves played well, but lost 5-7, 6-4, 9-11 in third set tie-break to Camden’s senior duo of Meredith Page and Jessica Shaver.

“That was the best No. 2 doubles team we’ve played,” Berl said. “And we were that close to winning.”

Sophomore Carli Hester played well at No. 2 singles, but fell to Camden senior Jill Dasha.

Berl had nothing but good things to say about the Camden players, coaches and fans.

“They had a good crowd and their they had two certified coaches,” Berl said. “They showed a lot of class.

“But I’m proud of our girls.”
