MOULTRIE — The Colquitt County boys soccer team’s improbable season came to an end in Kingsland on Wednesday when the Packers fell to Camden County 3-1 in the second round of the Class AAAAA state tournament.

The Packers were just 6-11 a year ago and had not won a state playoff match since 2002 before rallying from a 3-0 halftime deficit to defeat Paulding County 5-3 in overtime last week in Moultrie.

That sent the Region 1-AAAAA runners-up to the coast to meet the 16-1 Wildcats.

“We did not play real well,” Packers coach Mell Wier said. “We didn’t play like we did against Paulding.

“If we had played like we are capable, it might have been different. I still think we were the better team.”

But Camden scored two goals in the first half and went on to its 11th straight victory. The Wildcats will meet the North Cobb-Centennial winner in a third-round match.

D.J. Vanzant scored the Packers only goal, taking the ball through two defenders and beating what Wier called the best keeper his team has faced all season.

“We had numerous other opportunities,” Wier said.

The Packers finish with a 15-4 record, posting the second-most victories in school history.

Two of their other losses were to No. 9 Houston County, which won its second round state match 4-1 over Bradwell on Wednesday. The other Packers loss was to Tift County.

“You hate to lose a game you feel like you should have won,” said Wier, in his first season as the team’s co-head coach along with Rob Craft. “But we like where we are. This has been a very, very successful season. We can’t complain a whole lot.”

And while the Packers will lost 11 seniors, “We’ll be OK,” Wier said.

“A lot of teams, if they lost 11 seniors, it would kill them,” he said. “But we’ve got guys coming back who are learning to play the way we want them to play.”
